Fort Grey

Thaddeus set his pen down to rest at last and sighed, raking his fingers through his hair. He had, in the end, composed several letters, the longest of which was the explanation of Alfarinn and Simon's involvement, though that was certainly not the most draining for him to write.

He set the longest of the letters, stuffed in a thick envelope, on the counter of the bar. The others he placed neatly between the pages of the text he had brought from the Manor. Book in hand, he walked back to the bedroom and carefully opened the door.

Alfarinn continued to sleep soundly, a vision of marble skin and flowing hair spread over the blankets. It was more than a little tempting to climb back into bed and simply run his hands over that sculpted body, or attempt to kiss the Evenhet back into the waking world, but Thaddeus refrained, instead moving to the chest of drawers and placing the book in the top drawer. He had managed to find the passage he was searching for during a break from writing letters, and it had unfortunately proved as uninformative as he had remembered. He took one last lingering look at Alfarinn before exiting the bedroom, knowing if he stayed temptation would overrule his good sense.

Instead, he returned to the living room. His keyboard was now displayed prominently against one wall, though he did not think it wise to play right now; surely the depth Alfarinn's sleep had its limits, after all. Still, he ran his bare fingers over the keys, not firmly enough to make a sound, simply taking in their texture before approaching the long, narrow wooden box on the floor.

Inside the box was his sword, and Thaddeus smiled as he gripped it, remembering its weight. He did not often touch even this with his bare hand, concerned he would lose the senses tied to it, but today it was comforting to feel the hands of his father in the only way he could. Underneath the feel of those hands Thaddeus could sense other things, some of them dark, but his father he felt most of all as he stood. He shifted his weight, moved his shoulders, his wrists, his feet, his body remembering each action, his mind reveling in the sense of immediacy and presence the feel of a sword brought him.

He was startled out of his reverie by a knock on the door, and he hastily put the sword away. He checked the peephole and observed the uniformed man waiting outside, then realized he really ought to put on a shirt before answering the door and accepting the delivery. Somehow Alfarinn's more laid back attitudes about such things had rubbed off on him, he supposed. He scurried back to the bedroom and grabbed the first shirt he saw, throwing it over his head as he returned to the door to answer the now insistent knocking.

It was, of course, Alfarinn's shirt. And it was far too big for him. Thaddeus found he did not much mind, and answered the door with an uncharacteristic grin for the stranger. The smile faded sharply when the stylus was placed in his hands to sign the electronic signature tablet, but he bit his lip, concentrated on getting his name signed, and even managed to place it back where it belonged instead of dropping it. Then the package was placed in his hand and the delivery person was gone. Thaddeus closed the door quickly and looked down at the package doubtfully. Inside was his new laptop. He felt rather like a young man who had just had an infant thrust in his arms; wary and mystified and oddly pleased.

He walked to the third bedroom, intent on ripping open the package and carefully examining this new device.

Alfarinn 18 years ago
Alfarinn smiled as he watched the cursor skid across the screen and squeezed Thaddeus's shoulders reassuringly. He watched the "Tour Windows" pop up and figured that was as good a place as any to start besides it was likely to continue popping up until you at least pretended to look at it.

He let his mind wander to the things that needed doing while his companion listened to all the wonderful features the latest version of windows had to offer. They had the cameras to set up and the bug to place on the ring of the things they could possibly do here. They could still be searching for the apartment, perhaps Natt with a camera might be of use that way neither of them were left alone. Alfarinn smiled thinking again of Thaddeus's worry for him standing by himself in the alleyway. At the time it hadn't seemed reasonable to be anxious but now it would seem there was a very real danger that the killer was looking for them, or at least Thaddeus, just as hard as they were searching for him.

"You are quite welcome to spar with me once you've finished getting familiar with Mirabelle. I have a feeling you'll want to take your agressions out on something by the time you're done." Alfarinn kissed Thaddeus gently on the neck.

Leaning over his companion again, he typed in the address for google and leaned back.

"Here you are. Simply type in what you'd like to find information on in the little box and hit search. From there you can click on the links that look like they might be useful. For instance."

Alfarinn leaned over and typed in Nachton and watched the various entries associated with the town come up. "Here is a link to the local weather, there was one for the town's history and another for the official offices of Nachton. I'm sure you can find more interesting things to look up but that gives you an idea."
Thaddeus Grey 18 years ago
Thaddeus watched the tour somewhat dubiously, though he did come away from it with a fair amount of information. It was, he thought, no replacement for reading the manual cover to cover, but as time was of the essence, it would have to do.

He frowned a little at Alfarinn's suggestion that they spar; he had not meant to acquaint his companion with his sword in quite -that- way, at least not now. While a sparring session certainly interested him, particularly with Alfarinn, it seemed vaguely inappropriate under the circumstances.

When there is time.

He might have elaborated, but then Alfarinn introduced him to google.

He realized his mouth was hanging open in a most unbecoming manner, and snapped it shut. He did not, however, stop staring at the screen. While nothing, in his mind, replaced a well kept library, he had to admit humans were definitely on to something with this.

Fascinating.

He examined the sites Alfarinn had found with his search with some interest; the information was clearly human oriented, but of some use. It would, apparently, rain in the early hours of the morning, though Thaddeus rather thought that much was obvious from the heavy feel in the air. He pondered for a moment, trying to choose what he would like to know more about first, and decided on a long shot.

He typed in Lykaios, and added The Wolf for good measure.

Both eyebrows raised. After what he realized was probably a disproportionate amount of time, he came to the conclusion that he would not find anything immediately useful on his potential killer, which is about what he expected. Even so...he had taken in an impressive amount of information, though in a more chaotic fashion than he was used to.

In the midst of reading Ancient Greek lore, which seemed to vary in facts from link to link, he was assaulted by smaller windows that seemed to come from nowhere. Many appeared to be selling something, though some seemed to be tests of some kind.

Should I know who Jessica Simpson is? Why would I want to meet singles online? Is that woman doing what I think she's doing?

Then a window came up that concerned him.

My computer could be at risk? From what?

He glared suspiciously at the window. Clearly something was wrong here, but he had serious doubts that clicking on a flashing button would fix it. Deciding not to risk speaking lest the device was up to something untoward, he sent to Alfarinn instead.

[This thing is behaving in a suspicious manner.]
Alfarinn 18 years ago
Alfarinn made certain that Thaddeus had the search idea understood and left his companion to browse the internet while he started installing the cameras. He had just finished mounting one over the front door when he heard Thaddeus exclaim there was something funny going on with the laptop.

Feeling the unease in his companion, Alfarinn set down the tools and payed more attention.

[Beloved?]

He walked back into the room and looked over Thaddeus's shoulder. Alfarinn chuckled at the various pop ups that littered the screen. Leaning over he began to close them one by one, raising an eyebrow when he saw the porn ad.

"Just -what- have you been looking at?" Alfarinn grinned, knowing how often those came up for even the most innocent of searches.

Once the pop ups were cleared away, he downloaded and installed firefox and did a search for pop up blockers for good measure.

"They are ads meant to catch you attention, one way or another." He frowned at the scare tactics. "I forget that this wasn't designed by Meridian, that browser should keep out most of your pop up ads and we'll get some virus protection software next time we're out. "

Kissing Thaddeus on the cheek, Alfarinn knelt next to him a moment to see if there was anything else needed or wanted.
Thaddeus Grey 18 years ago
Thaddeus smiled at the term of endearment.

"I am my beloved's, and his desire is toward me."Â?*

He realized he was beginning to sound like a besotted romantic. He did not so much mind.

He made a somewhat indignant noise at Alfarinn's implication, though the Evenhet seemed more amused than anything. His companion seemed intent on making sure such things did not bother him any longer, which was an acceptable olive branch. He was vaguely disturbed at the mention of viruses, which did not seem in any way encouraging, but clarifying what he had been up to seemed more important.

Thank you. I was, in all honesty he raised an eyebrow at Alfarinn reading up on Lykaios. The name, at the very least, seems to have spawned a fair amount of lore and some rather disturbing cult followings...though reports vary.

Simon did mention The Wolf was old, though I suppose it is impossible to say if the name is mere coincidence or something more troublesome. In any case, reports are contradictory enough that it probably is not relevant even in the unlikely event that there is a connection between The Wolf and the lore. I suppose that is the disadvantage of this system; multiple sources, and not half of them credible. It is interesting though, dark as it is to read about.

Thaddeus decided that this line of thought was, in reality, an oddly morbid thing to discuss in light of the circumstances. This name he was calmly discussing belonged to a man who wanted him dead. Deciding a subject change was probably for the best, he continued.

In any case, how are the cameras coming along?

/ooc That's Song of Solomon, 7:10, otherwise known as that really cool book in the bible :P.
Alfarinn 18 years ago
Alfarinn's amused grin fell upon hearing the topic of Thaddeus's search. He supposed it was to be expected but it was a mark of how very much this was all on his companion's mind. Reaching out a hand and cupping the side of his companion's face gently, he said.

"I doubt you'd find much of use. I suppose every now and then it might surprise you but the Wolf didn't sound much like an internet personality."

He leaned forward and typed "Arin Björn" into the search window and was amused at the various pages that popped up. Not all of them were work related, as he seemed to have picked up a following amongst teenage girls as a possible dream catch for his youth and money.

With a faint blush, Alfarinn turned back to Thaddeus.

"That should give you a laugh or two."

Tucking a few strands of hair behind his ear, Alfarinn answered the question.

"Quite well, we should be able to pick up what they are receiving when I'm done connecting them." He stood up to head back into the other room. "Anything else you need?"

((OOC: So very true. Rev. Grey does pick the most interesting scripture to quote. ))
Thaddeus Grey 18 years ago
Thaddeus nodded in acknowledgement of Alfarinn's comments regarding The Wolf.

I thought not. That was merely what came to mind.

He raised his eyebrow as a list of pages came up highlighting any number of things about his lover. A list of "Top Ten Reasons I want to have Arin Björn's Love Child," the "official site of 'The Ari Grrrrls'," and promises of "Everything you ever wanted to know about Arin," were mixed in with more official looking Meridian press releases.

How very -shameless-.

I happen to have...he turned back to the screen and began reading out loud...'The young, rich, and dead sexy Arin Björn, one of the most eligible bachelors in Nachton,' in my apartment. What more could I need?

He regretted teasing when he turned to give Alfarinn a smile and saw he was blushing. He himself would likely be greatly bothered to be put on display this way and while he had thought the Evenhet was dryly amused by the whole matter, he couldn't imagine being totally comfortable with the idea were he in his companion's place.

He further reflected that it was just as rude to watch an invasion of privacy as it was to actually commit it, and hit the back button without further comment, electing instead to browse the Meridian site.
Alfarinn 18 years ago
Alfarinn smiled and looked at Thaddeus.

"Him naked in your bed? " He asked innocently.

"It doesn't bother me. Its just some are not very...accurate." Alfarinn smiled and looked down at his companion. "I bet you didn't know my favorite food was Lefser, or that I loved dancing all night at the clubs, and my favorite color is blue."

He came and stood behind Thaddeus once more, leaning down and wrapping his arms around his companion. "And I have a liking for petite blondes...but I believe there is some debate on that. Perhaps you'd care to enlighten them?"

Alfarinn nibbled gently on Thaddeus's neck as he contemplated just what the potential of being seen in public with the Anantya would do to the other man. Thaddeus did not strike him as the type likely to be fond of the attention. He just hoped it was something that wouldn't bother him a great deal.
Thaddeus Grey 18 years ago
Thaddeus let the corner of his mouth twitch at Alfarinn's reply, though he did not quite relate to the Evenhet's reaction to the situation. It was, he supposed, amusing that Alfarinn was more concerned with the inaccuracies than he was the publicity.

Oh dear, no. Can you imagine the bleach shortages? You seem to be dead set on causing a public health crisis.

Deciding those kisses on the back of his neck were simply too much of a distraction to be allowed, he turned in his chair and caught Alfarinn's mouth instead. The intentions were good, even if the logic was faulty, though he did pull away quickly enough, eyebrow raised.

Petite?
Alfarinn 18 years ago
Grinning against Thaddeus's neck at the health crisis, He glad to see that his companion was no longer concerned. Though he was taken by surprise when the Anantya turned and kissed him.

Alfarinn leaned into the embrace with surprised enjoyment. He would have thought Thaddeus wanted to continue working. It was cut short a moment later and he supposed that he was right about the man's intentions.

"Hmm?" Alfarinn looked at him puzzled for a moment. "Oh, yes, I prefer petite blonde women...didn't you know?"

Alfarinn looked at Thaddeus.

"Why? Would you have classified yourself in such a way?"

He wondered just how his companion did see himself, it had not occured to him to ask before now but it was always something interesting to him.
Thaddeus Grey 18 years ago
Thaddeus pulled a face of mock indignation and sat up a little straighter in his chair, tilting up his chin.

I am the -personification- of masculinity. And I am not petite, I am trim.

He cracked a self depreciating grin, but schooled his expression to seriousness before continuing.

Alas, I shall have to prove the extent of my manliness at a later date. There is, after all, important work to be done.

With a smirk, he returned his attention back to the laptop. With their easy banter he could nearly forget that there was now a camera in his apartment, but their current circumstances were never far from his mind. It was, he thought, a good thing he was more resilient than his appearance allowed for, though in his experience appearances were a poor measure of strength. Mai could best both himself and Alfarinn...at the same time. Blindfolded.

At least, he knew who he would put money on.

Realizing that he had lost his thread of thought, he turned back to Alfarinn.

Shall I continue learning of your secret exploits, or would you like a hand with the cameras?
Alfarinn 18 years ago
Alfarinn raised an eyebrow at Thaddeus. It would seem that his companion harbored some interesting views of himself but decided to change the subject.

"I assure you, I have no reason to doubt your masculinity." Grinning, he added. "However, you can prove it to me again later if you'd like."

He was finding himself quite distracted by thoughts of the earlier proof and straightened up once more. If it were left up to him, Alfarinn was afraid they'd never get anything done. It was probably a very good thing that Thaddeus was the good influence that he claimed to be.

"Well as interesting as I'm sure they are... Your help would be most appreciated." He reached down a hand to his very manly companion and added. "You can always bring the laptop to bed with you later and continue your exploration of the world wide web in a more comfortable setting."
Thaddeus Grey 18 years ago
Thaddeus allowed for a moment to reflect on just how such proof could be accomplished before clearing his head of the thought. He thought perhaps Alfarinn had the right of it; possibly his companion really -was- addictive.

I have a feeling I could lose hours to Mirabelle, more if I am comfortable.

Thaddeus accepted the offered hand and walked out with Alfarinn into the living room. He could not help but be impressed; one would most likely fail to notice there was a small camera mounted at all if they didn't know what they were looking for. Still...he knew. He gave it an irrationally wide berth, though he knew he would still be seen when it was turned on.

Subtle.

He walked the short distance around the living room, checking various vantage points where someone could see the front door and not be seen immediately. He noted the camera over the front door, but even when two were accounted for he still felt a prickling at the back of his neck. Then he looked directly above his head and raised an eyebrow.

Right then. He nodded his head. You did well, and thank you for doing this. I really am appreciative.

Thaddeus looked up at Alfarinn, trying to show his sincerity in spite of his discomfort with the cameras themselves.

Where do you need me?
Alfarinn 18 years ago
Alfarinn smiled and nodded his agreement. He had a feeling that Thaddeus would quickly become very efficient at using the computer and then there would be difficulty dragging him away from it.

He was pleased at his companion's compliments on the placement but he could sense Thaddeus's unease. Alfarinn walked around Meridian in complete view of the cameras most of the time and had schooled himself long ago to pay them no mind. Most of his suite was wired to allow MARI access and the AI was an integral part of the the building.

Alfarinn wrapped his arms around his companion and kissed him gently.

"Its only for a short time and then this will all be over." Still holding Thaddeus close as he looked at the cameras he asked. "Have you given any thought to what you'd like to do afterwards?"

Alfarinn leaned back and looked at Thaddeus before placing him in the center of the room and started hooking up the cameras. Using his own laptop to receive the images, he made sure the lenses were pointed in the correct direction. Gesturing to his companion to move a big to the left, Alfarinn went and adjusted one of the cameras to cover a small blind spot.

Speaking over his shoulder, he explained.
"What I mean is, I doubt Anantya would be very happy with me taking up a permanent residence in the Manor and Evenhet might not approve of an Order of the Night in their midst either. So...would you want to continue staying here or perhaps you have something else in mind?"

Alfarinn turned back to his companion and smiled a little self consciously. "That is assuming you wanted to continue staying together."
Thaddeus Grey 18 years ago
Thaddeus looked at his feet for a moment before realizing he was being silly. Of course he had entertained notions; it was only natural given the circumstances.

Yes...I've given the matter some thought. He willed himself to stop blushing. The apartment is mine until the year's end, so we do have time to consider the matter...but in spite of the good memories this place holds, I would prefer we found something that is truly...ours. Something we pick out together.

Thaddeus frowned thoughtfully for a moment, pulling his lower lip between his teeth. He was, at this moment, quite glad he had thought about this previously, in spite of being slightly embarrassed to admit it. Even now, it was hard to imagine packing up his things and moving them to a new home; while he would always maintain a place within the Manor unless he was told otherwise, the image of empty gaps in his bookshelves where they would shift locations over time made him a little wistful. It was good that he had not been taken by surprise when Alfarinn asked; he was honestly not quite sure how he would have reacted otherwise.

A house, even. Something reasonably close to both of our Clans, with a garden...

Thaddeus chuckled inwardly at his own transparency. Indeed, he had given this some thought.

In all honesty, I am happy when I am with you and would live in a back room at The House of Pain if that were required of us. Though I might, from time to time, have to question my sanity if that were the case. He smiled teasingly. But I rather like the thought of carving out a niche in this city and making it ours.
Alfarinn 18 years ago
Alfarinn tilted his head to the side and regarded his companion curiously, amidst all that they had been dealing with Thaddeus still had time to already consider where they would live afterwards. He found it quite touching.

"You seem to have the matter well in hand. I must say I'm pleasantly surprised." He grinned at his companion before going to check the next camera. "A house with a garden it is then, if that is what you want. "

He couldn't keep himself from grinning at the thought of waking up next to Thaddeus each morning in a place of their own. He'd miss the Tower but he couldn't help but be excited by their future together.

Alfarinn chuckled at the thought of living in the House of Pain but then turned thoughtful at Thaddeus's choice of words.

"You know... Our connection could be of use to our clans if we'd like it to be. Perhaps we could create a sanctuary where any clan could come and go freely. Meet and speak to each other or stay for a time if that is what is needed. We'd probably have to require some form of payment for the latter just so we don't have every clanless vampire in the city on our doorstep. I don't want it to be a half way house for the undead but a place to go in a time of need. We could discuss payment in each situation and I'm sure we can come to some agreement. It isn't as though either of us needs money." He looked up at Thaddeus to see what his reaction to this idea was.

"What do you think?"
Thaddeus Grey 18 years ago
Thaddeus raised both eyebrows at Alfarinn's suggestion. The idea was so like his companion to think of; idealistic and compassionate and practical all at once.

His man was going to change the world, and Thaddeus could not have been more proud.

We could really do this.

The idea that he could be a part of such a change was staggering. Here he was considering a place where the two of them could be both safe and free, and Alfarinn had taken that idea and made it into something so big he could barely get his mind around it.

I cannot help but think of how useful such a place would have been for us. Thaddeus shook his head. This is...huge, this could change so much...He realized he was pacing, a habit he had cured himself of quite some time ago, and stopped. And started again.

There would be so many details...the Clans seem to trust you, though I cannot say the same for myself, and if we are to own and run this place, there would need to be a measure of trust in order for it to work effectively. Perhaps recognition of neutral territory would be needed from all parties. Thaddeus stopped his unconscious pacing and looked at Alfarinn. Of course, at the moment Tacharan is not even recognized in an official capacity, so we need to consider whether their inclusion is a good idea as well. And we would need to take measures to prevent humans from finding out about its purpose.

He paused in speaking long enough to begin pacing again. This would be complicated and massive and he could not think of anything he would rather do with Alfarinn. He had thought, after their current mission, they would enjoy some well earned peace and rest...but now he realized how very unlike Alfarinn that was. The man was fueled by such ideas, and Thaddeus found that quality more than a little attractive.

A Sanctuary...odd that you mention that, considering...not that I had set my mind on a location, mind, not without you, but I might know just the place. He shook his head, trying to organize his thoughts. There is a chapel near the waterfront; it has been out of commission for some time, but that much real estate in the middle of a city is a hard sell. He rubbed his chin thoughtfully. The property had crossed my mind...though I am not certain it would appeal to you.

He looked up at Alfarinn somewhat sheepishly, realizing he had ranted for quite some time.

So...yes, I think we should.
Alfarinn 18 years ago
Alfarinn was relieved that Thaddeus seemed genuinely interested. He would have hated for his companion to be only half heartedly interested in such an idea and go along with it for his sake. He listened to his companion's ideas, watching him pace as he spoke, it was a charming sight that he knew he'd never get tired of.

"It would be a haven for everyone and that would include clanless which would include Tacharan, by Evenhet's definition at least. I'd say we are the least fond of the orphans but I'd not turn one away if there was a need for our help. Besides, if it is to be neutral then it needs to include everyone no matter their rank or association that way it can truly have impartiality that it claims."

He pondered the location that Thaddeus suggested and decided that it was perfect. What other location would be better suited to a haven for anyone in need than a church?

Alfarinn walked over and put his arms around Thaddeus.

"You are absolutely brilliant."
Thaddeus Grey 18 years ago
Thaddeus nodded in agreement, though he was still thoughtful on the matter of Tacharan and the clanless.

Yes, this needs to be neutral territory for everyone, not just Anantya and Evenhet. It would be helpful, though, more meaningful, to have my Elder's backing in this. I am not certain how they will respond to the idea, but I imagine it would be different, easier to come to an agreement, if we were simply looking for a place for our two clans. This is...bigger than that. We will just have to stand firm on that; this is for all of our kind.

He smiled in surprise at the sudden embrace, though he was quick enough to return it. He was, in fact, somewhat hard pressed to keep himself from doing more than that; something about Alfarinn coming up with brilliant ideas made Thaddeus want to kiss the Evenhet senseless. He could not quite get passed just how satisfying it was to be exchanging ideas with Alfarinn, to be discussing a future together. He chuckled a bit at his companion's declaration and put his hands on the other man's shoulders, speaking dryly but with an insuppressible grin on his face.

Yes, I found a building for your idea. I expect my medal any day now.

He rubbed absently at his chin, realizing their work had come to a bit of a stand still in light of their exciting discussion.

I am...more than enthusiastic about this plan of yours, but I suppose we must take care of first things first.

Perhaps, though, we can find the time to take a look at the church in and amongst the other things we must do.
Alfarinn 18 years ago
Alfarinn laughed at the dry remark and raised an eyebrow at his companion. Thaddeus's sense of humor, which he noted could come at any time, was not surprisingly quick and intelligent, just like the man in front of him.

"Well I am not sure I am authorized to give those out. Would you settle a tall Norseman as a consolation prize?"

He went back to his computer and flipped through the different views, making sure each worked properly before he was ready to wire up the next one.

Looking up at Thaddeus, he said.

"This plan of -ours-." Pointing at the laptop, Alfarinn said. "Here come take a look at what we have so far." Once Thaddeus reached his side, he slipped his hand through his companion's and looked back towards the screen.
Thaddeus Grey 18 years ago
Thaddeus reached up and tucked a strand of hair behind Alfarinn's ear.

That will do nicely.

He watched Alfarinn make adjustments on his laptop, realizing that he had not given the cameras a thought in the past several minutes. He wondered if one simply got used to such things after a time, and decided that while that may be the case, he did not particularly want to get used to being watched. A situation may come up where cameras are exactly what he needed to notice, and some level of awareness gave him an edge.

He was distracted by this line of thought by Alfarinn's firm assertion. His mouth curved in a half smile.

Alright. Our plan.

He approached the laptop and looked over Alfarinn's shoulder as the Evenhet clicked through the various views of the first camera. He compared the views on screen to what he saw with his own eyes, and saw no glaring blind spots. Giving his companion's hand a squeeze, he nodded his head and took in how to navigate the viewing software for the cameras.

Well, no hiding from this one in any case. Are we being recorded right now?
