Hold up a sec! (open)

"Hey Nikhila!"Â?

Drew shouted across the Tikerak. It was late on a lazy Saturday afternoon, folks were out enjoying the sunshine and the day, and his cheerful shout caused one or two of them to turn toward him. Drew didn't mind.

He hadn't seen Nikhila, not for more than a second or two for a while and Drew never had any trouble spending time with his long time crush. Even if he didn't have a thing for her, Drew liked Nikhila. She also knew his family, the Pack out in Arizona, he'd been feeling a little home sick of late, and she was a link to them.

Dropping his bat bag and his sports bag, he'd just finished up playing a double header over at the preserve, he charged toward the tall lean Indian were.

"Hmmmmm..."Â?

Nikhila made a little thoughtful sound mentally going over her calendar. She did try to keep Sundays clear for she and Aidan, which left Monday morning.

"I have an eight AM class and office hours on Monday mornings. But if you don' t mind something every early, and by very I do mean any where between six and seven... or office hours finish at eleven. I'm afraid I'd have to ask you to come all the way back here as well,"Â?

'There is a slight chance there are a number of vampires out gunning for me and my Alpha is afraid I'll be attacked.' Nikhila didn't say that... but she thought it. Instead, she said,

"As I have a lunch meeting at noon."Â?

She hated to be so difficult but that was all there was for it. Poor Kai, she didn't know how hectic Nikhila's Mondays were.

Nikhila softly elbowed Xeph in his ribs for his odd sense of humor. The poor girl had only barley gotten here and hadn't really had a chance to settle in yet. Everything had been devoted to her job. Something Nikhila understood far too well.

"You should be nicer than that. You might be able to persuade her to bring you exotic sushi. And just think how fresh it would be."Â?

Drew's request wasn't completely unexpected. In fact, it made good sense, if she weren't pregnant she might consider asking for some further training of her own. As it was, she would just be proud of the young man for asking... in his own way.

Drew hopped he hadn't bitten off more than he could chew, but it was a good idea and a tempting offer. He was also equally sure he could learn things from them he could never learn from his grandfather, father, uncles and cousins and if he was some day going to lead the Pack out in Bitter Springs, he had to learn all he could. That was part of the reason he was here.

"I wouldn't expect them to. Besides, I'm tougher than I look and I've been tossed around and chewed on plenty."Â?

To a certain extent he could hold his own too, still couldn't take either of the old guys but he could take a couple of his uncles and a majority of his cousins. Drew wasn't a 98-pound weakling after all.

"Maybe I ought to stock up on band aids on general principle though and do we have health insurance? I mean what if I need a bone set and what about dental? Hard to attract a member of the opposite sex missing a front tooth."Â?

While Drew was meant it and hoped the Chief would let him work with the Pipers a bit, that didn't mean he wasn't going to goof around now. There was a time to be serious and a time to not be serious, right now, lounging around on a sunny Saturday afternoon... that was a 'not' time.

"Hey! If there is exotic sushi to be had I expect to be included in the taste testing!"Â?

Scrunching up her nose, she smiled a bit. "Well it sounds like we're both quite busy, but I do run every morning from five to seven, I could cut it short an hour and meet with you at six. Unless you'd like to run with me?"

She wouldn't mind the company. She enjoyed running on her own, but having a companion was always nice, it kept her mind occupied with things other than the upcoming stresses of her day or half remembered song lyrics.

Kai gave Nikhila and Drew wide eyes.
"No one is eating my fish!" Bright laughter bubbled up from her. "I like my job, thank you very much."
Xeph 13 years ago
"I'm being perfectly nice... to Kai," Xeph insisted. He stabbed his finger at Drew. "This one, however, can stock up on Hello Kitty band-aids because if he insists he can take a pummeling then I'm going to put him through the wringer."

He gave Drew his best scary grin, wiggling his eyebrows. It was easy to fall into the pattern of being laid back and friendly. It was a familiar act for him, although if truth be told this was the first time in a long time he'd considered it anything less than genuine. It wasn't that he didn't want to be friendly; no, it was more the fact that his mind was full of weighty matters he wished he didn't have to think on. Like what a certain jackal-vampire was up to now and when he was going to have to move again.

"I promise, I'll just eat any excess stock," Xeph said in all seriousness to Kai. "Speaking of jobs, how's your new one?" The last bit was directed at Drew once more. "They're not working you too hard, are they?"
Nikhila 13 years ago
Ordinarily she should have just accepted the offer to run with Kai, but some days she'd been able to do a long run and others she'd tire quickly. It wasn't consistent so that was out.

"I think six will be fine. Are you a coffee or a tea drinker?"Â?

She smiled slightly as the conversation threatened Kai's fish. Nikhila didn't feel bad about saying something.

The smile didn't fade as Aidan continued to tease Drew. He seemed more relaxed than he had in a while. It was too easy to be focused on much more serious matters at hand. This was good for him. And it made Nikhila feel better to see Xeph unwind somewhat.

Stretching and adjusting her position on the bench a bit using the stretch to lazily and subtly flirt with Aidan, but -very- subtly not wanting to distract from the conversation. She was rather enjoying the way it flowed and the fact that it was light and cheerful. To that end, however, opted to let Drew fend for himself.

"It's a boy scout thing."Â?

Drew insisted sounding slightly hurt, but not meaning it.

"I just want to be prepared is all. Of course I prefer Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle band aids, but the point is I have to go get some if you're gonna try and rip me apart."Â?

He grinned wolfishly at Kai and teased her just a bit.

"What's the point of working there if you don't get a snack once in a while?"Â?

Drew was pleased, and a little proud, when the Chief brought up his job. He was also a little bummed out as he didn't have a lot to report right now. Of course, he wasn't sure how much he could say in front of Kai either. Bragging to Nikhila was one thing, the odds were she knew what was going on any way, but he didn't know about Kai. She had just gotten her and it wasn't up to him how much to fill her in on.

"So far so good. That damned AI of theirs still creeps me out. But Kem took me up to collections the other day to look at some pot shards."Â?

That wasn't so important. What he thought was important was that Kem had let him tag along. It was the beginning of some kind of a relationship.
Kai 13 years ago
It would work just fine, and she would most likely get up and start her run sooner. "Herbal tea if you have it otherwise I just stick to water."

She turned a rather scathing look on Drew. "Because one doesn't eat ones work. You wouldn't eat your archives would you?" A bright grin softened her tone letting him know she was only teasing.

"Besides some of those fish aren't worth the time it takes to catch them."

((sorry it took so long I couldn't get my accounts to switch succcessfully and then I forgot my password and finally gave up and used my phone ))
Xeph 13 years ago
Xeph raised his eyebrows at Drew. He really needed t have a chat with him. "Your new boss is being good to you then?"

He couldn't help but be slightly surprised. Xeph had played to the jackal when he'd placed a man on the inside, as he'd been ordered to. He'd made sure it was someone who was fairly easy to trace to the Den, though, and possibly even easy to link with the Kadzait. From what he knew of Kem prior to digging around for dirt on him, the man wasn't a slouch in the brains department.

From what he knew of Kem after digging around for dirt on him, the man wasn't a slouch in the brains department and he should know enough to add two and two together. Not that Xeph had any real clues as to how much Drew's new boss knew, but he didn't think it would be a stretch to conclude what Drew was... both spy and were. Xeph hadn't expected Kem to continue to be civil. His estimation of this particular man rose up a notch so that he didn't sit at the level of "dirty scum-sucking bottom-feeding silu" and was floating somewhere around "almost honorable opponent."

Time would tell. Maybe he guy just knew nothing about weres. He shrugged to himself and tilted his head at Drew.

"And... pot shards are exciting?"
Nikhila 13 years ago
"I think that can be arranged."Â?

She said with a smile. She'd have tea some something to eat ready. It was a -very- early hour for a meeting. Of course, especially within the Pack guessing what one would eat could be a bit of a challenge. But Nikhila would improvise, it would be a decent breakfast.

Mentally Nikhila rolled her eyes, subtly could be lost on Xeph, she'd beat him over the head later. She watched the sun continue to set and the grounds be slowly bathed in a gold orange light, perhaps she could talk him into a run, after dark. She was going to miss being able to shift.

She chuckled as Kai and Drew half heartedly, teasingly bickered. It didn't surprise her that they would have made friends. It was undoubtedly good for both of them, maybe especially Kai as she was newly arrived and far from home.
Drew 13 years ago
"Tell ya what, you let me sample a few and I'll tell you if they are worth catching or not."Â?

Drew laughed with a wicked grin. Hmmm... all this talk about food was making him hungry. Was it breakfast time or dinnertime? Oh who cared, he had tomorrow off too so he'd just find something to eat and an excuse to go out and play more.

Even though he was playing with Kai Drew was able to hear what the Chief wasn't saying. He chewed at his lower lip and tried to work out how to say anything.

"Yeah, actually he is. Better than I'd think for a guy like him. I'm not sure what to make of it. Busy though, very busy."Â?

It was hard for Drew to reconcile the fact that Kem seemed like a good guy and was a decent boss with the fact that he was a vampire and the enemy. Very confusing.

"Actually, yeah they are. I'm supposed to be working out a few things about them but I've never been much into Egypt so it's a bit tricky. I'll get it though. Wouldn't want him underestimating me after all."Â?

And he meant that in more ways than one. Drew didn't intend to be caught off guard if something odd happened at work.
Kai 13 years ago
Satisfied, Kai made a mental note to go to bead early Sunday night and run from four to six, then meet with Nikhila, shower, and head to work. That way she still go in her full run and some useful information on this newest facet of her life. "Where do you want to me to meet you?"

She gave Drew another scathing glare, and wrinkled her nose at him. "I'm going to go with no on that one, but what I will do is teach you how to find the more exotic fare in our lovely ocean. How does that sound?"
Xeph 13 years ago
Xeph wrapped his arms around Nikhila's shoulders and leaned around from behind her to kiss her cheek lightly as she watched the sunset. He listened to what Drew said about Kem as his boss and his confusion grew, as well as his frustration.

The man was a vampire. He knew it. And he'd installed Drew in their facility specifically because he expected him to know he was a werewolf. There was no way Kem would have missed the obvious connections. Why, then was he treating Drew well? Xeph didn't want to like him. And he definitely didn't want to feel any respect for him. The jackal was turning this into a battleground, and in war you didn't sympathize with your enemy. Or maybe you did. Xeph would have to look into it further.

He grinned at Drew's idea and nodded at Kai.
"I'll sample a few too," he said with good-natured humor. "If they're so precious to you we'll just nibble and then you can throw them right back in."

As Drew detailed the nature of his pot shard... thing, Xeph nodded and laughed.
"I don't think he's going to underestimate you. Don't try too hard to impresshim or your co-workers might lynch you." Drew meant well, but he sure could come off as over-eager sometimes.
Nikhila 13 years ago
"I think my office would be best, over at the Academy. I should even have some materials you can borrow. You might not have enough time to go through them all before your interviews start on Monday but there is always next time."Â?

Fortunately, turn over wasn't terribly high at the Academy. She was sure it had to do with the fact that the Academy was so well insulated and Pack only. Other schools she'd taught had had very high turn over rates. Of course, even with their low attrition rate it seemed like she was always interviewing some one. Kai would no doubt get plenty of practice in her job as well.

Aidan pulled her out of her reverie for a second. She smiled at him and rested her head on his shoulder for a second. She closed her eyes and sighed, for the moment quit happy. Sitting back up she echoed his kiss on her check with one of her own.

It was odd to think of Kem as a vampire. He was a very capable head of archives and he had always been very considerate if not kind to her. She liked him. Thinking about it made her wonder if his girlfriend Aishe was also a vampire. Perhaps Drew would find out. She just hopped the young man came out of things whole, she'd very much hate to have to tell his family something had happened to him.

"We're planning a fishing trip now? An authentic hunter gatherer ritual?"Â?

That is what she'd heard Kai say.

Nikhila found herself chuckling at the idea that Drew might be able to tone down his actions. No doubt, he wanted to get himself in Kem's good graces as soon as possible.
Drew 13 years ago
"So brining bait and tackle to the aquarium is cheating? It seems like a much more likely place to catch fish. More concentrated population and all."Â?

He'd be up for catching his own fish though. You ate what you brought down when you hunted, it was disrespectful to do otherwise. Fishing would be no different

Drew sighed to himself at Nikhila and the Chief. He knew she was a lost cause but old dreams died hard. If they died at all.

Don't try too hard? Drew wrinkled his nose a bit, he'd have to try that. He wasn't worried about a lynching, he did have to consider the possibility that he'd just annoy the shit out of Kem and he'd get fired or given a new shift where he wouldn't see his boss at all. OK he'd try and tone it down, a bit any way.

"It's all good, there aren't enough people on the night shift to gang up on me. But I might just be a bit more... cautious. Just in case."Â?
Kai 13 years ago
Kai nodded, she'd get directions to said office from the front desk later. It would do no good to ask for them now when paper and pen were not handy. "It's a date then."

Exasperated as threw up her hands and blew her breath through the little tendrils of hair resting on her forehead. "If you bite them, you might as well eat the entire thing, Xeph."

A small laugh ruined her glare at both men. "Yes, Drew it is most certainly cheating. Poor little fish, they trust humans or something equally as silly."

Turning her smile to Nikhila, she laughed again. "I don't know about that, but more like throwing a line over the side of the boat to see what happens, until I know anyone I take below is competent in SCUBA gear."
Xeph 13 years ago
Xeph shook his head and laughed at the turn the direction was taking. "I don't know, I tend to bring my bait and tackle with me no matter where I go," he said crassly to Drew. "You'll have to let me in on the secret of leaving it behind."

Well, no one ever said he was always classy all the time. He kept an eye on Nikhila, prepared for all manner of retaliation for his lack of tact, ready to duck should she decide to repay him with a charley horse or some such.

To Kai he said, "Oh all right. I imagine I could keep myself from murdering your precious charges in the name of dinner." He grinned at her to let her know it was all in fun. "If any of them ever step... or swim... out of line though, tell 'em the Big Bad Wolf is going to get them."
Nikhila 13 years ago
"Well that does leave me out."Â?

Nikhila had never tried, or even considered Scuba diving she'd done some free diving in her travels but that was it.

Note to self, bring up their child with a bit more class. Nikhila thought just before digging her elbow into Aidan's side. If they had been alone she would have a few equally direct comments about what he could do with his bait and tackle, but they would have to wait.

Instead she stood to excuse herself. It was about dinner time. She had two nice steaks marinating in some pepper wine and spices, one to be grilled a bit and one to just be put on a plate. She was rather determined to find a way to 'cook' for Aidan.

"I'll leave you three to sort out the fish... or sushi as the case may be. But you'll excuse me I need to start dinner. I've a hungry wolf to feed. Kai I'll see you on Monday, Drew... I'll just see you."Â?

She smiled at both of them and raised an eyebrow at Aidan, silently asking if he was coming.

((OOC... out pending response))
Drew 13 years ago
"I've never met a nondomestic animal that flat out trusts humans and fewer still that trust wolves."Â?

Drew observed. But even with a semi intelligent observation he managed to say it with a sense of humor. Teasing.

"Don't look at me. Not enough water,"Â? Or money he added to himself, "to even think about scuba diving."Â?

He snorted at the Chief's comment. It was true enough. And sympathetically cringed at Nikhila's retaliation. Brave guy to make a joke like that around a classy gal like Nikhila.

"Yeah, I'll catch up with you gorgeous... er... Nikhila."Â? He added quickly studiously avoiding Xeph's eye for that little slip. "You have a good dinner."Â?
Kai 13 years ago
Since Nikhila had addressed the comment in a most satisfactory way, Kai didn't feel the need to say anything.

She smiled at Drew,
"then you've never seen a wolf in the water. I don't seem to have any trouble with them, but then I don't think I give off the predator vibe all squashed into a wet suit."

Kai gave her attention to Xeph and deadpanned, "Little Red Riding Hood doesn't swim in my tanks."

Her face brightened up to a smile and she offered Nikhila a wave. "Enjoy your dinner!"
Xeph 13 years ago
Xeph rubbed his side in mock injury where Nikhila had elbowed him, nonetheless giving her his best lewd grin.

"No, no she doesn't. In fact she's headed off to make dinner." Xeph eyed Nikhila as she stood to leave, nodding at her to indicate he was on his way.

His eyes snapped over to Drew at his comment and he half-snarled, half-smiled at the kid before laughing.
"One of these days, boy," he said with good humor. Drew meant well, and he could hardly take offense when he was correct. He wondered how Drew would feel when Nikhila's pregnancy became obvious. He was pretty sure it was just a game to Drew, but... well, it had better be a game.

"Kai, it was nice to meet you. Drew, I'll see if a few Pipers won't mind knocking some sense into you someday. Now I have to go see a lady about a steak."

With a wave, Xeph moved around the gazebo to join Nikhila, ducking just as he reached her, wrapping his arms around her, and sweeping her off the ground to carry her, spinning around every now and then, back toward the Den.

((ooc: Xeph out))
