Hold up a sec! (open)
"Hey Nikhila!"Â?
Drew shouted across the Tikerak. It was late on a lazy Saturday afternoon, folks were out enjoying the sunshine and the day, and his cheerful shout caused one or two of them to turn toward him. Drew didn't mind.
He hadn't seen Nikhila, not for more than a second or two for a while and Drew never had any trouble spending time with his long time crush. Even if he didn't have a thing for her, Drew liked Nikhila. She also knew his family, the Pack out in Arizona, he'd been feeling a little home sick of late, and she was a link to them.
Dropping his bat bag and his sports bag, he'd just finished up playing a double header over at the preserve, he charged toward the tall lean Indian were.
"Sounds like a plan!"Â?
He called after the Chief and Nikhila, grinning at them as they headed back for dinner. Apparently it was love, she let him pick her up.
"What kind of vibe -do- you give off in a wet suit?"Â?
Drew asked with a mock leer. Kai was cute, apparently smart and she seemed entertaining and tolerant, all traits high on his list, but so far he'd just not felt any kind of 'click'. And it wasn't because of Reign either. Hey you didn't 'click with every one so he wasn't worried.
Her eyebrow lifted and she gave Drew an appraising look. He wasn't her type, well truthfully she didn't really have a type. But if she did, she didn't think Drew would fit into it comfortably. He was nice to look at and seemed a good bit of smarts under the charm, but he had a kid brother way about him that she could see becoming incredibly irritating in a romantic relationship. Still, a bit of teasing wasn't ever a bad thing.
"Think sleek surfer girl vibe. You know all glistening water and mysterious eyes."
She waggled her eyebrows at him and had to bite her lip to keep from laughing.
"Not many of the surfers I've seen wear wet suits."Â?
He waggled his eyebrows in attempt at a suggestive expression and failed miserably. Giving up Drew laughed, both at himself and at Kai. He wasn't getting an 'interested' vibe from her, but that didn't mean it wasn't still a fun game to play.
"So long as you don't do the cowboy thing."Â?
Where that oddly serious thought had come from Drew didn't know. But he'd had some bad experience with 'cowboy' types and even knowing he could chew their arm off didn't keep him from being a little leery of them.
She had a not so consistent habit of talking with her hands, usually when she was excited, nervous, or flirting. Situations that didn't happen all that often, she was sad to say. Still as she'd spoken, she'd gestured with her hands over her chest and belly. "But I pull off the full wet suit pretty well, too."
A cowboy? Huh. "That's not likely, mate. Could you imagine? Me? In boots and a straw hat?"
He didn't know her clothing preferences, but the thought of herself decked out like a cowboy had her laughing one of those deep belly laughs.
Drew nodded thoughtfully.
"The ocean is a big place to look for something that little, but I thought the whole wet suit thing was about not getting cut up on a reef or something."Â?
Not that he knew much about surfing. But he picked up things here and there from other folks, movies, books, and then he just filed them away to be used later.
He was glad she kept things light and didn't notice his more serious tone. Instead he laughed and shook his head.
"You might not dig the hat, but there is something to be said for tight jeans... Besides, I thought you Aussies had a whole cowboy thing going on too?"Â?
And that was all the teaching she was going to do today. She'd heard her voice take on that imparting useful information tone it got when she was teaching. It wasn't her favorite, so she didn't say another word on the subject.
"I won't deny the allure of a pair of jeans." A sly little grin curled her lips. She owned a few, but only because one couldn't wear shorts and a polo to everything.
"Yeah, but only if you like traipsing about in the bush looking for things to kill or run from. I'd rather do that on four legs, thanks."
"OK between the fish, Nikhila off to make dinner, and now hunting... I'm freaking starving."Â?
He looked down at his ball uniform, he'd done a couple of good slides during the day, and smiled wryly.
"And I think I need a shower."Â?
"Which do you plan to do first?" She grinned again. "One I would be delighted to join you for."
She'd let him take that as he wished. She knew there wasn't anything electric between them, but teasing and flirting never hurt anyone. And she had this sneaking feeling, that it was all a game to Drew anyway.
He said with a big grin as he brushed some dust off his pants.
Huh, maybe this was why Nikhila didn't want him to pick her up today. It had nothing to do with the fact that she was going with the Chief, she just didn't want to get dirty. Yeah, that was it. That little bit of rationalization cheered Drew up a bit.
"But since I usually eat in the dinning room I thought a shower first would be best."Â?
The truth was Drew could only barley cook, some how even the raw fare he favored came out wrong, and even then he got very lazy about shopping.
As they set out toward what had become a comforting home for Kai, she pulled the elastic from her hair, shook her head, and let the lightly wavy locks fall down over her shoulders. She really needed to get it cut, it had been almost a year since the last time some one had taken scissors to it, and that person had been herself.
"I'm rather guilty of eating in the dining room for most meals myself. It's just easier to let someone else store and slice and serve, then to go shopping for groceries."
She smiled at him. "Of course it avoids the funny looks I get when the only thing in my basket is several different kinds of meat, with out any sign of vegetables or grains. For some reason the store clerks are a little uneasy with a girl who only eats meat."
Kai ran her fingers through her hair. "If only they knew that stuff never sees the heated inside of a pan or oven. I can only imagine the looks on their faces then."
"Nah, just turn on the accent and tell them you're having a barbie and every one else is bringing the vegetables and beer."Â?
It never bothered him walking around with piles of raw meat.
They crossed the threshold and he indicated what wing he was in. Drew honestly didn't think Kai meant to take him up on his offer. Actually unless he was actually dating someone it would be strange. He wasn't in love with Reign, she wasn't in love with him and they both knew it wasn't long term because he would go back to Bitter Springs and she'd go back to Chicago sooner or later. But still, it would be almost like cheating.
Kai nodded, and they headed toward his rooms. She wondered how far Drew would be willing to take this little game, and she was curious just exactly how far she'd take it as well.
They made it all the way to his door, before Kai decided it had to end before they entered his rooms. Laughing softly, she rose up on tiptoe and pressed a lighthearted kiss to his cheek.
"I think I'll see you down in the dining hall. I'll save you a spot, hmm?"
Lowering to rest her weight full on her feet, she stepped back and smiled at him.
Drew grinned.
It was hard not to laugh as she followed him to his rooms. He'd only meant to tell her what direction he was headed. But hey if she wanted to come with him who was he to say no. Let it not be said Drew was afraid of a cute girl.
As she made to disappear he gave her a quick one armed hug, keeping his bags from crashing into her.
"Sounds like a plan. I'll be along when I'm 'civilized' again. See ya in a few!"Â?
He said cheerfully before sliding in his door tossing things where ever and finding the shower.
((OOC...Drew out))
Laughter carried her all the way back to her own room, and her own shower, as she remembered she'd been splashed by one of the dolphins earlier, the one she had a distinct feeling had splashed her the other night when she'd met Drew, and she probably smelled like fish.
