Flying (Open - attn Dana)
Amir had taken the time to change out of his dirtied clothing into something far more suitable to a night on the town. Hardly one to overdress, he'd ended up in jeans, a dark blue tee, and a button-down shirt over it. His muddied sneakers had been replaced with a different pair of casual shoes, sort of a cross between sneakers and dockers. Fairly nonspecific in his taste in clothing, he generally stuck to whatever was trendy in stores for college-aged guys.
Now, suitably attired, they were hurling down the roads through Nachton at break-neck speed. Amir hadn't had a particular destination in mind, but he stuck to the longer, straighter roads on the outskirts of the city and avoided the stops and starts of downtown. Dana had wanted to ride, and it was much more easily done when they were able to open up a little.
The winding roads brought him unintentionally to the Waterfront, which he guessed was as good a place as any for a start to the night. There was almost always something happening in the amphitheatre, or if Dana had it in mind to go sailing they could take a boat out. Not to mention the paths and walkways all through the culture center.
Tonight the lights were bright and there was plenty of activity. It sounded like some kind of concert was going on, and people were everywhere. He brought the bike to a halt out of the way, in a darker corner of the otherwise well-lit parking area, and slid off the bike, offering his hand to his passenger.
They could ride some more later, especially in the very early morning when the roads outside Nachton were quiet and nearly deserted.
He tossed a grin at the other guy, who looked to be about the same age he appeared. Apparently he wasn’t the only one with this idea, although he did wonder in the other couples case who drug who.
Dear god this is why he didn’t go shopping with women. It was dangerous. Drew didn’t think of his retreat so much as expeditious and tactfully sound. Besides, he was itching to get on this thing and try it out.
He tossed her a bit of a leer, but from a distance, it was safer.
“I’m wounded you don’t trust me to give my life for yours? Some friend you are.”
The rental guy had explained them to him and made him read a pamphlet so Drew had some idea what he was doing, or at least he thought he did. But he’d also been land locked most of his life and this was exciting.
“Now, how do you work this deal?”
“Virgins.”
Hey, she might not necessarily trust a rented jet ski, but she had grown up on Lake Michigan and while the lake could be freezing even during the summer, you went out and played on it. Bastian had taken her jet skiing once or twice as well. It didn’t hurt quite so much to think about him any more. Maybe she was getting over it, or maybe having more friends and family about kept her from feeling so alone. Pakpao, Aishe, Kem, Drew, Xeph and the rest of The Pack had made a huge difference to Reign.
Giving Drew a quick run down she slid into the life jacket she’d been given, mounted the thing with apparent confidence and took off. She got out a fair ways, spun to a stop and then looked back at him with a look that clearly said ‘this was your idea.’
"It's like a motorcycle - but on the water," he said as they approached the jet ski. There was a gleeful tone to his voice.
He watched the woman take off on her own jet ski, while the other guy was left to figure it out. Amir untethered their jet ski, climbed on, and held his hand out to Dana. He settled her in front of him this time, not behind, one hand on her waist and one reaching around her.
Including the baffled young man in his explanation, Amir gave them both a quick run-down, as he understood it.
"It's pretty simple... the levers on the handlebars increase your speed, and the friction of the water under you will slow you down. Squeeze to go, stop squeezing to stop."
He looked over Dana's shoulder to see if she had her hands on it properly. "You want to try it first?"
She listened carefully as he explained, letting the physics of it form a picture in her mind as her hands took the controls.
"Oh yes, please."
She settled against Amir, his arm only a little distracting as she very gently pressed the levers on the handlebars. This resulted in them moving gently out into the water. Dana's smile brightened, and she pressed more firmly on the levers. They moved like lightening over the water, Amir was right, it was like the motor bike, only on water and she was driving.
Laughter rang from her as she took them in a big circle, before coming to a gentle stop near to where they started. Leaning back against Amir, she took a moment to catch her breath.
"Wow, that was incredible."
She turned to the side a bit, to smile up at him. "I think it would be interesting to see what you can do with this thing."
The other guy was nice enough to explain it more thoroughly to him.
“Thanks man.”
He didn’t think the other guy had planed on getting roped into two sets of lessons tonight. At least his had been short.
No fear right? Drew squeezed the accelerator and was quite surprised by the jump. He didn’t fall off but he thought about it for a second. He shot toward Reign and a he veered to the right to avoid her he managed to hit her with a spray of water. Slowing to a stop he couldn’t help but laugh as she sputtered and cursed.
Dana's hands were light on the handlebars of the jet ski, and she understood the operation, so Amir wrapped his arms around her waist and hung on as she pulled a wide circle over the calm water. When she stopped and leaned back he dropped his hands to her thighs.
"Easy huh? I'll give it a shot if you want."
She didn't have to twist his arm. Amir shifted forward just a bit on the seat, reaching around Dana. As he leaned down he enveloped her slight body with his; arms around hers, legs against hers, his chest against her back, cheek to hers.
"Hold on. You can see how the front moves, and you can learn how to do it yourself."
There was nothing for her to hold onto but the handles, next to his hands. It would give her the opportunity to feel it instead of just ride it. Amir gave the jet ski a quick test, flexing the levers just a bit to see how much it took to accelerate. They jumped forward a few times until he felt like he had it down.
"All right, here we go," he murmured, and sent the jet ski skimming quickly across the water. Experimenting with a tight turn, leaning them both to the outside of it to balance the jet ski, he winged them back over the wake they'd just created, bouncing over the waves.
Making a turn in the other direction he set the machine against the ocean tide. The waters were smooth but there were still some waves to go against. He took them all the way out to the buoys that marked the edge of the zone they were allowed to travel in and quickly turned the handles to the side, sliding them to a stop.
Sitting up again and letting them rock with the gentle waves a bit, Amir wiped ocean water from his eyes and looked down at Dana.
"What do you think? I might have to get one of these."
She’d been on the verge of calling something nice to Drew when she looked up and there he was. Apparently, he’d gotten the hang of the jet ski and was headed right toward her. He managed to turn and spray her with salt water and he thought it was funny! The nerve!
“God damned you boy you’ll pay for that one!”
Oddly enough, she wasn’t mad, he was teasing her and now had given her permission to play. She turned her own craft and took off after him like a shot. He however, had seen this coming and had a head start on her. She was forced to admit though it was a hell of a lot of fun weaving in and out of the waves at speed. It was better than a boat, but she wasn’t going to tell him that.
The intimacy of their embrace as they moved over the water added to joy and helped her feel safe as they sped about.
She was laughing, her breath coming in pants as he let them bob on the water.
"I think you should, then I could ride on it with you. This is great fun."
She grinned up at him, and pressed a soft kiss to his lips. "Can I drive again?"
The ocean is a big place, but some how his path of retreat took him near the couple they had been crossing paths with off an on since they arrived. Catching Reign making a sudden move to cut him off Drew suddenly changed directions, completely unaware that he had sent a spray much like the one that had started Reign after him right at the other couple.
It occurred to him that making long-term plans with Dana hadn't been tonight's course of action. Impulse won over common sense though; "want" over "need" for just a moment and he leaned down as she kissed him, meeting her lips with his, sinking into the feel of her, the taste of her...
He pulled away, nodding when she asked if she could drive. His sinuous smile curved his lips up again and he said, "You can drive us anywhere you'd like."
He placed his hands back around Dana's waist, spanning them over her hips, just barely brushing his fingers over her ribs, when suddenly the night took on a completely different mood. There was the buzz of an engine, a suspicious splashing, and suddenly they were doused with chilly ocean water.
For a moment Amir froze. Drowning. He couldn't breathe. Water filled his nose, his eyes, his mouth. His hands clutched at Dana's waist for a split second before he realized what had happened and he released her. Regaining his composure he let go and wiped the spray from his face.
"I'd suggest you drive after them. Very fast. I think we owe them a shower."
He pointed past her to the retreating back of the offending jet ski, the one carrying the man Amir had instructed at the dock. Evidently he'd figured it out.
She wasn’t about to make the same mistake and broke of her own pursuit. Decelerating, stopping and waiting to see what was next. What was next apparently was Drew coming after her. No no no that wasn’t right, she was the irritated one, she got to chase him. Not fast enough on the controls Drew managed to drench her yet again.
“You’re not making any friends here boy!”
Amir's suggestion put a not too nice glint in her eyes. She watched the young man perform another sideways drowning to the woman he'd come with. He wasn't very nice at all and Dana wished she could do more than chase him about on a jet ski.
After a quick bout of mental calculations on trajectory, Dana took off after the man. She went wide and approached him from the same direction as his date. With a small noise of effort, she made the engine turn sharply, and water shot up in a wave drenching the young man, but leaving the girl free from its path.
She let the jet ski bobble in the water a moment, then very carefully spoke.
"Please do us all the great pleasure of watching where you are going."
Hmmm prim little thing wasn’t she. Drew really had no use for people who used manners as a weapon and part of him was inclined to growl, but if he had sloshed her first she was entitled to be a little cross with him. So he decided let the snooty attitude go. Besides the guy she was with had been nice enough and he didn’t want to start a fight either. Some how he had a feeling that Reign would be quite content to get into a bit of a scrape and he didn’t want to pull her out.
He turned a winning apologetic grin to the couple.
“I did watch, I didn’t hit ya. Well not with the…”
He gestured to the jet ski, its name currently escaping him.
While not a formal apology, and well he didn’t use the word ‘sorry’ it was very clear that that he did regret catching innocent bystanders in his little tiff with Reign. With out really thinking about it he had gone into his pitiful wretch rouitine, it had gotten him out of worse scrapes.
Reign, however, was currently laughing her ass off at him.
It was Drew’s choice to fight or not though so she waited. When he decided to semi apologize all she could do was laugh at his pathetic attempts to talk his way out of things. He really did look sad sitting there all wet trying to apologize with out apologizing.
“I told you that you weren’t making any friends there boyo.”
Well, the human won out since he possessed no special water-walking abilities. The other woman spoke up before he had a chance to, though, and he turned to her with brows raised.
"That was an attempt at friendship?"
He smiled at the other guy, teeth gleaming in the darkness. "I wish you luck as well. I didn't realize you were Chinese. I apologize for the oversight and will be happy to return the favor at the earliest opportunity."
His misunderstanding was deliberate; he was feeling magnanimous. If these humans wanted to fight then that was just as well. He'd given them an out though, if they wanted to take it.
She continued to simply look at the couple, letting Amir speak for her was well with in their relationship, and she had nothing to add that did not sound petty and she refused to be petty.
It surprised her that irritation and a little bit of anger were all she felt, had she been alone...well then again no. Had it been in Ireland, she'd have run away from the whole mess, twice now. If she'd come here alone today, she might have ignored them, or given them a good scare, but she would not have run. Not any more. How marvelous, so much so that she very nearly smiled.
With a broad grin he shook his head and took on a self-deprecating air.
“Some days I’m better at these things than others. I blame limited socialization in my early childhood.”
She he did still remember freshman psych.
OK now the guy was giving off a weird vibe. Drew wasn’t sure if this was friendly banter or a queue to exit. It was, however, a big ocean so…
“No harm done. It’s dark enough out, mistakes happen.”
It was both an apology for Drew's mishap and acknowledgement of the kid's strange misunderstanding.
Reign tried to clean off her glasses a bit, but it was hard between being all wet and having only a life jacket to polish them on. She wanted a better look at these two.
His temper broke through and he found himself losing his "nice human" facade completely as his dark eyes flashed and his face fell into the familiar fierce twist. He addressed the other man, ignoring the woman completely except to flash a wicked glance her way. "That might indeed be the case. If we have the misfortune to meet again, I'll pray it's a good day. You might want too, as well."
He leaned against Dana, took the handles of the jet ski, and fishtailed it intentionally, letting the motor rev as he faced the two of them straight on, the back of the machine creating a trail of turbulence. For all his discomfort with this particular battleground, Amir could not back down. He was annoyed, slightly aggravated, and definitely tired of humans for one night. He would not be satisfied until they moved off and gave him and Dana plenty of space.
((ooc: Permission obtained to use fierce visage.))
She was glad when Amir leaned against her and took them across the water, away from the humans that would cause such disturbing things to happen.
