The woods are lovely, dark and deep

Their suitcases were brought up just as they were heading out the door. Joshua decided that he should not go tromping around through the forest in a suit. Gretta decided that perhaps a dress was inappropriate for this venture as well, though the sunhat had been quite nice.

Rummaging through her clothes, she found a tank top in a light blue, a pair of khaki shorts and a pair of mid-cafe length jungle boots. Gretta pulled her long blond hair up in a single braid and then headed outside to wait for Josh. This was much better for exploring.

It did not take long for her partner to appear. She suspected he actually took less time to choose something to wear but spent extra time making sure his suit had been properly put away or something. She didn't know but one rarely had to wait on Joshua for very long and today was no exception.

Gretta looked him over; he was now wearing jeans and a tee shirt. It was an improvement as far as she was concerned. It looked more comfortable and everyone should be comfortable.

"Ready?” She smiled at him. "This was your idea so you pick which way we go.”

As Joshua walked along the path, he listened to Drew and Mel chat. He did not have very much to add, but he was also generally the more silent of the two of them. He smiled slightly at Drew's story about the copier, which was for him the equivalent of humor. At least with a stranger. He had been known to laugh on occasion.

When there was a break in the conversation Josh asked,
"So what do you do in the archives, Drew? It must be a big company."

Mel addressed his comment about the general population of Liechtenstein, which wasn't really much of an exaggeration.
"Who knows," he said, "it's a pretty small sea if you're going to marry local."

He shrugged his shoulders. It was a joke, but Joshua's face never changed from its usual deadpan expression. Maybe Drew would understand, maybe not - Josh wasn't a slapstick artist. Even his comedy was expressed with a straight face.

Mel brought up American celebrity drama, and he took another opportunity to be hilarious. He regarded Drew with a serious expression.
"Regarding Lady Gaga, and other celebrities... is there somewhere nearby where I can pick up a magazine? What do you call them - tabloids. I need to make sure I'm current on all events. You never know when the next three-eyed baby will be born."

"Huge."

Drew answered emphatically.

"I haven't even worked out how many departments there are. But they stash me in the basement, in the archives, filling research requests, filing, sorting, playing with old and rare documents. Nothing fancy."

He was pretty sure he'd answered that question, but hey, jet lag could be a bitch so he just answered again without batting an eyelash.

Truthfully he was more pleased that his tie story had gotten a giggle from Gretta. Maybe he wasn't coming of as a total idiot after all. Well, one could hope.

Coughing to cover a laugh at Joshua's observation he nodded.

"Yeah it is a wonder we aren't in breed within an inch of our lives. Sometimes you have to get out and break the mold a bit and hope to get lucky."

Crap that maybe had a bit more of a double meaning that he'd intended, but Drew just carried on as if nothing had happened hoping everything would be over looked.

"They have everything but the news on the news." Drew rolled his eyes. "Well it depends on which broad cast you watch but even the good ones to the celeb pseudo news."

OK, that was unexpected. Joshua didn't seem like the kind of guy to go in for alien abductions and who cheated on who and that kind of crap. But he grinned at the dry irony with which the man said it. Maybe MIB had it right if Joshua was looking for something like that.

"Any grocery store will have several and thee is a news stand right next to the bus stop closest to the Den. They have a fare selection and its just a quick walk."

Drew explained what exactly he did for Meridian and Gretta thought it sounded interesting but lonely. Joshua might have liked it because of all the fascinating things he might learn about other cultures through the artifacts but she thought he would prefer to see the different countries personally.

She harrumphed at Joshua and crossed her arms across her chest. "She shouldn't settle. Availability is no excuse.” Gretta glanced sideways and up at him, the hint of a smile on her lips. "She could have imported if necessary.”

Their new friend spoke of inbreeding and she shook her head. "No, no, this is what I mean.” Gretta waved a hand. "That kind of thing is for crazy royalty. We are close enough to France, Switzerland, Germany...all of them really. Go on holiday and bring someone home with you. It will be a counter invasion.” She was really starting to like this idea. "Instead of a bunch of Liechtensteiners coming into their country we will just take their people out. A few at a time.”

It would appear that Drew took Joshua seriously about wanting to read up on the tabloids because he promptly told him where he could find them. Gretta rolled her eyes at her partner and then looked up at the sun, low on the horizon.

She turned around and with a smile flashed at Josh, who should expect this sort of thing from her, she swatted Drew on the arm. Taking off back the way they had come, Gretta yelled over her shoulder. "Tag! You are it.”
