The Crusty Old Salt and the Sunshine

Kai found a spot on the back porch that was free of shade, and tucked her body into the high backed wicker chair there. It was like some angel had known she was coming and had reserved the perfect spot for her. She'd been in the warm waters of the Eastern Seaboard for over a week, and was still cold. With a soft sigh, she lifted her face to the sun and pulled out her phone.

She could have done this sooner, but she'd required a shower and then to have her body home. The Den had become her home and she'd missed it all those months cut off from the world except for her weekly twenty minutes of personal time on the sat-link, and she's used that time to talk to her mom, so her contact with the Nachton pack was nil beyond saying good-bye just before the autumnal equinox.

Pulling up her text app she typed one handed and with only one eye squinted open:

~I finally made it back home, though I'm pretty sure the Arctic waters have permanently frozen my bones.~

She sent it to Drew and Brig and her Assistant at the Aquarium. They were her friends and while she didn't know if they'd worried about her, she didn't have anyone else she wanted to text.

Kai tossed the much abused bit of technology onto the low table in front of her, and leaned her head back on the chair to let the sun do everything it could to warm the perma-chill from her. She knew two things from this trip, Arctic sea animals were cool, and she would never ever visit them again. Her Aussie blood just couldn't hack the cold.

((anyone is welcome to come say hi, Kai's just going to hang in the sun for a while. ))

"See, Pipers are men as a general rule. We never had that problem. Not that there's anything wrong with it," he said holding up his hands, an odd view for someone in a military organization, he knew this, but he'd rather judge on skill than on sexuality.

"I'm not even sure how long Viv and I will be in Nachton. Once my father steps down as Elder, I step up and there's plenty to do, lots of traveling since it'll be all the Pipers, not just the Alpha's crew. But my father still has at least another thirty forty years and I don't see him stepping down unless Elder Hammerthynn does. That's years in the future."

Brig considered six months alone on a boat with strangers and at best two willing females to share. Not unheard of for Pipers, but not something he'd encourage.

"And yes, Canadians do speak funny, eh?" He grinned and leaned over, giving Kai a quick kiss on her cheek. "I gotta go, but welcome back. I'll bring Viv around so you can meet her."

She grinned again. "You do like to invite trouble before it happens don't you?"

Kai lifted her cheek to him and smiled. "I'd like that, and thanks for the welcome. It was good to see you again."

She watched him walk away and thankfully felt only happiness for him. With a smile she turned her face back to the sun and promptly fell back to sleep.

((Kai out! Thanks for saying hi!))
