Almost Like Family (Invite Only)

It had been a long productive day. Alexander had spent most of it cooking, or getting things ready to cook. According to most of his recipes, much of the action would take place about an hour before the turkey was ready.

Thanksgiving dinner was definitely a massive undertaking for one person. But Eiryk was asleep; he couldn't be expected to pull and all-day stint. Alex had done most of the prep work by himself and secretly he sort of thought that might have been for the best.

It was a good day so far; they were expecting Aishe and Kem over and Eiryk had invited two of his other friends as well. There was work being done (not today of course) on Alex's store and he'd be back in it, and his apartment, before Christmas. Things were looking up and he'd been in a very good mood all day in spite of a few small (and easily corrected setbacks).

Now, however, was time for the Waking of the Beast (and not that beast... they didn't have time). Eiryk had asked Alex to wake him earlier than usual. He almost never woke up when his alarm went off. Alex was pretty sure air raid sirens wouldn't wake Eiryk up.

He walked to the bedroom and went through the door; he'd finally learned after two weeks of being a live-in guest that it didn't actually matter how much noise he made during the day. When Eiryk slept, he was dead to the world. Much as he was now. Alex grinned a little as he looked down on Eiryk, who was sprawled all over his bed. Amazing. It was a king-sized bed yet Eiryk managed to somehow take up more than half of it.

Alexander sat on the side of the bed, then lay down next to Eiryk, slipped his arm under his head, and kissed his forehead. Then he rested his mouth next to Eiryk's ear.

"Eiryk. Time to wake up. Company's coming. Your hair is a mess. Someone scuffed up your shoes. Your shirt is completely wrinkled and your pants have pleats in all the wrong places. There's a bottle of really bad 2005 white wine in the ice bucket and Aishe just called and said she and Kem are bringing a case of Budweiser."

If that didn't startle Eiryk awake, Alex didn't know what would.

He chuckled as they discussed possible hair combinations for Kem's hair. While Artemis was still partial to pink, the green certainly had promise. Thoughts of the color green, plus the coming holiday season gave him another idea.

"You should just put red streaks in your hair for the holidays. It would be very festive."

Winking at Pak, he took another bite or two food. The discussion of Kem's hair and expertise was all in good fun until Eiryk mentioned the closet. Artemis nearly choked on the last of his mead. Laughter and drinking don't mix. But at least it didn't come out his nose.

Doing his best to recover, he declined the honor of opening the bottle. There was no need to stand on such formality, they were among friends here. Besides, it was Eiryk's party. Now that he had sampled Alex's hard work, Artemis was certain he had made the right choice in wines. The earthy, fruity blend would go nicely with the meal.
Alex Aristos 13 years ago
The conversation had clearly turned to banter and everyone seemed to be getting along just fine, which made Alexander pretty happy. This was a much different Thanksgiving than he was used to and he had no trouble admitting to himself that this was a vast upgrade. When the subject of closets came up he half expected to receive a religious lecture on sin and sodomy but instead it was just a continued thread of jokes, mostly centered on Aishe's good-natured fiance.

When it looked like everyone was starting to slow down, food-wise, anyway... the wine was still flowing... Alex excused himself and headed back into the kitchen once more. His oven was preheated and there was still dessert to cook, but the pumpkin pie filling was prepped and ready to go. All he had to do was fill the crust and put it into the oven. When that was accomplished he set the timer and headed out to the table once more.

He had only been gone for a minute or two; now Kem's hair was going to be red and white. Kem himself didn't appear to be jumping onto that bandwagon although he seemed to pause and consider.

When Artemis declined to open the wine bottle Alex decided to keep an eye on Eiryk... normally bottles were totally his thing, but he hadn't exactly gone light on the drinking either and with Eiryk, just about anything could go wrong and frequently did.
Aishe 13 years ago
"Oh I liked that movie," Aishe said with a grin. She laughed and turned to Eiryk. "He's welcome to come out of my closet any time."

To Pak she pointed a finger.
"You just deal with it," she said with a grin, "and while you're at it, keep those gerbils in the archives where they belong, not in our house!"

Artemis finally struck on a color combination that gave everyone pause for though, even her.
"That might be cute," she said.

She wondered briefly if Chris could be talked into something equally festive. Although she stood by her initial assessment. Blue really was his color.
Kem`Raaisu 13 years ago
"Thank you," Kem said to Aishe. "I look forward to hiding in your closet later."

He smiled innocently at Pak, doing his best not to poke his tongue out at her and say, 'nyah nyah' or something equally juvenile. What did she think they did at home anyway? Tiddlywinks? He was pretty sure that was her running theory.

"Hey hold on." He glanced back and forth between the two of them. "Gerbils do not belong in my archives. And if I find any, there's going to be trouble. Aren't they a delicacy somewhere? Everything is a delicacy somewhere."

And then suddenly, he was being colored like a candy cane. Only he might actualy be able to swallow a red stripe or two for Christmas. If nothing else he'd get a lot of shock factor from his co-workers and Clanmates.

"What do I get if I do this crazy color scheme?" he said with suspiciously narrowed eyes. Because 'a cookie' was not going to cut it.
Pakpao 13 years ago
"I like that one, I shall call him Candy Kem and it will be fun. Or maybe we can get him to weave some tinsel in his hair, that would be festive too."Â?

And she'd seen one of her staff who'd had it done recently. It was rather pretty, and sparkly. Who didn't like sparkly?

She stuck out her tongue at Aishe. Silly responsible girl ruining all her fun.

"The cat would probably eat them. So you're right, archives it is. And there is nothing you can say to change my mind. Especially if you keep on like that!"Â?

Gah. It was great Kem had a private life but, -private- was the key word there. She really was just going to have to ignore this or they'd just keep bringing it up.

What did you use to bribe Kem. Threats wouldn't work, she'd just be retaliated against. It really would be fun, so she went for the big guns.

"I'll give you a choice. I got a hold of a second daisy wheel printer that is compatible with your 64 or I'll pay to have your car detailed top to bottom. If you do the red -and- the tinsel you get both."Â?

She'd have offered to wash the BMW herself but that might have been seen as a threat.
Eiryk 13 years ago
Eiryk had followed along with Alex to retrieve some fresh glasses, ones more appropriate to white wine and ones that hadn't had mead in them. It also gave him half a second to get fresh with Alexander and let him run smack into the oven door when 'Candy Kem' was proposed. He covered his 'ow' with a laugh as it was pretty funny and limped back to the table, glasses in hand. But he hadn't dropped anything and he was quite proud of himself.

Eying the bottle Eiryk wondered if he should risk it. He very rarely dropped or other wise injured a bottle. Screw it, he was going to risk it. The risk paid off an the bottle was successfully opened and poured and passed around.

"But what kind of wine do you have with gerbils? Is it dark meat or light meat?"Â?

He did like to entertain and hoped that Alex was having a good time. He looked like he was and Eiryk had to admit this was as much like a home as his place had ever felt. But then again, it had been home since Alexander had been there.

"Do I get my car detailed if I put tinsel in my hair? Is this an open offer?"Â?
Artemis Bellezone 13 years ago
"I hadn't really planned on offering a reward. It was merely a helpful suggestion."

He smiled as innocently as possible, for him. Which meant it was something like the Cheshire cat who had just given Alice cryptic advice that was likely to lead her to all sorts of trouble.

"Weren't you the one who was worried about looking old?"

Artemis stopped pushing those buttons and remained suspiciously quiet the moment tinsel was mentioned. His hair was longer than Kem's. The last thing he needed was for Pak to head his way with her tinsel. It had taken him forever to remove all of the beads. She would no doubt have that stuff woven intricately through his braid. It would take A LOT more than a car detailing for him to consider the idea. Besides, there were far too many buttons for her to push in his car.

Ah, wine and gerbils. He could answer that question. It was reasonably safe.

"Try a nice blush. White Zinfandel goes with everything."

Sipping the wine, he considered it. It really had been a good year for wine. Which was surprising considering politics and turmoil of the era. Those had been difficult times, for the people of Italy and all around the world. It was one of the few times he considered being a soldier again. Only he would have been fighting against his own nation. That time was so different from now, when he could sit and enjoy a holiday with friends.
Alex Aristos 13 years ago
Alexander was starting to feel much more comfortable now that nothing had exploded, Eiryk wasn't missing any limbs (yet), and he was catching on to the general good-naturedness of the teasing around him.

"I don't think so. Not for people anyway," he said to Kem's question about gerbils as a delicacy.
"You might try getting a cat of your own if Pak is being miserly with hers. I hear they tend to like that sort of thing."

He listened to the way the conversation was going and then added,
"You could probably use your archive gerbils to hide any tinsel. They might like to nest in it. If there are any gerbils left after the cat gets through with them."

It sure sounded like Meridian's archives were going to be full awfully fast at this rate.

He eyed Eiryk's kitchen a little worriedly; he did not want to have to try looking up recipes for gerbils as a result of tonight's joking.
"I thought we already covered what happens when we give Eiryk ideas," he said with a nervous glance at his partner.

"I mean, aside from someone bleeding."

Since it seemed like everyone was done eating Alex stood, took his wine glass and his empty plate, and brought both into the kitchen. He left the glass on the bar top where he could sip while he straightened things up and began to clear dishes from the table.

When Pak came up with a new nickname for Kem, Alexander snorted. Turning to the pale-haired man he grinned and said,
"Wow. Strip much?"
Aishe 13 years ago
Aishe shook her head at Pak. "I think you're losing him," she said.

Her wine she sipped at. Not being a drinker to begin with, she'd tasted and enjoyed some of Eiryk's mead. She did the same with Artemis' offering but knew she wouldn't finish the glass. It was all right though. Kem would.

When Alexander got up Aishe followed him to the kitchen with her plate too. She still hadn't given up her "kitchen helper" role.
"I'm pretty sure the cook isn't supposed to do all the cleaning too," she said softly to him. He returned her words with a smile and a shrug of his shoulders, clearly unconcerned. It made her shiver. Happily. This was why she liked being with Eiryk and Alex. All the pretty colors. She could swoon.

Behind her, she felt Kem's eyes on her. She was pretty sure he was laughing at her. But it didn't matter.
Kem`Raaisu 13 years ago
Kem winced at Pak's nickname. And, just after that, he laughed... Alexander's comment caught him off guard. Grinning at the human Kem said, "Hey, a girl's gotta make a living."

He did nod though, at Aishe's assessment.
"Definitely losing me between the stripper name and the tinsel. I was okay considering the dye. But I just haven't heard enough to motivate me."

He turned his self-deprecating little grin on Artemis. "I stopped worrying about looking old years ago when all of it went white. But I think I draw the line at wizened. It just sounds... well, kind of wrinkly and uncomfortable. And I think it smells like denture cream."

He rolled his eyes up to the ceiling when he realized his archives were being filled with animals. Poking a finger at Pak he said, "You started this... you'd better clear your hypothetical gerbils out of my very real archives. Or I'll borrow Eiryk and his knot-tying skills."
Pakpao 13 years ago
"I am shocked and appalled."Â? Pak playfully scowled at Artemis. "I thought you had taste! White Zinfandel?"Â?

She cocked her head thoughtfully for a second.

"Well... maybe with gerbils... but... I don't know. We'll just have to try it some time."Â?

It couldn't be worse than squid on a stick could it? Oh lord, now all she could see in her mind's eye was gerbils on a stick. It was disturbing. The worst part was she had no one but herself to blame. Rather than further debate the merits of gerbil wine pairings she gave her attention to the new bottle that had been open. And was impressed.

She didn't even bother to defend her cat's honor, she was too busy snorting at Alexander's come back about Kem's stripper name. It was always the quite ones you had to look out for. Turning to Aishe she looked for some support.

"How do I get him back. I want to see at least red stripes."Â?

That was a very low threat. It had taken -hours- to get those knots out of cords after the viking got through with them. Out of habit she mentally reached for some flatware, but caught herself before throwing it or even lifting it. She had to settle for narrowing her eyes at her friend. She'd get him back later.

"You keep that man away from my department. The whole floor even or you will pay. I swear it."Â?
Eiryk 13 years ago
"Excellent."Â? Eiryk happily complimented Artemis and the wine. "I might be looking for an excuse to be in Italy soon."Â?

He'd seen Pak and Kem get into things before. It was safer not to get in the middle.

Alex was apparently determined to clean up. He wasn't worried about it and beckoned both Alexander and Aishe back to the table.

"It will keep."Â?

Hell he'd hire someone to come in and clean up tomorrow. Besides, Alex had been very good about keeping things under control as he went.

He laughed at Alex's retort.

"That is twice now... I'm starting to think you're hitting on Kem. Do I really need to get a chaperone for you two?"Â?

Eiryk shot playfully at Alex. Of course right then his attention was recaptured by his own name being taken in vain.

"We're up to harassing Pak? I'm in, but I'll want hazard pay. She bites."Â?
Artemis Bellezone 13 years ago
Still lost in his own thoughts, he nodded absently at Kem. Then it registered what the other man had said.

"Wait. Color me confused, but then why the brown?"

Artemis chastised himself for being so distracted. He was going to have to work harder at paying attention and staying focused in this crowd. Otherwise, hecwould find himself agreeing to who knows what. He didn't have time to worry about it for long before Pak was accusing him of lacking taste.

"I do have taste. It is just acquired taste. It can't be all bad though. I chose you."

The last was said with a smile as he gave her hand a gentle squeeze. Artemis considered that for a moment. He was beginning to think that she knew him quite well. The hold she had kept on him through most of the meal had prevented him from fidgeting or trying to make something out of the silverware. The amusment of that thought and the various possible silverware gadgets carried over and he beamed at Eiryk.

"I am glad you like it. Just let me know, and I will warn... I mean set thing up with my staff in Italy."
Alex Aristos 13 years ago
Alex was glad his stripper comment seemed to give Kem an "out" if he wanted it. He returned to the table when Eiryk beckoned but didn't sit down, instead raising his eyebrows at his boyfriend.

"If you think that was a hit-on," he said, "we need to buy you a book. I'm pretty sure implying someone strips for a side job doesn't indicate interest."

He paused.
"Now, if I'd been tucking singles in his pants while I said it, you might have to worry."

With that, he leaned down, kissed Eiryk quickly right on the mouth, and gathered up more dishes. "Now shut up and let me clean."

Face red, he headed back into the kitchen and managed a snicker at Pak's threat that Eiryk wasn't allowed on her floor. Apparently he had a pretty wide reputation. It was pretty easy to see why.
Aishe 13 years ago
Aishe shook her head sadly at Pak. "I don't know if you can get him back," she said. "I might be able to come up with an idea or two if you up the ante some. There's the cutest little necklace in one of the shops on the strip."

She smiled innocently at Pak. If Pak wanted to know how to get Kem back on the candy-striped bandwagon Aishe was going to pay hardball.

Aishe answered Artemis' question for Kem, who was currently going head to head in a threat-match with Pak, a favorite pastime of theirs.

"Shock factor," she told him. "And a morbid curiosity to know if anyone would recognize him if he did it."

She listened to Alexander's defense and then laughed as he planted a good one on Eiryk's lips. The blond subsequently helf-fell out of his chair with a shocked (but pleased) expression on his face.

Helping to clear the table, Aishe followed Alexander back into the kitchen with more dishes.
"Nice distraction," she said. "But next time you should go for a 5 or a 6. That was more like a 3."

((ooc: Eiryk's reaction courtsey of... uh, Eiryk))
Kem`Raaisu 13 years ago
Kem was highly amused that Aishe seemed to be spinning the whole hair-dyeing thing to her advantage. He wasn't actually sure she knew of anything that would tempt him but she was sure giving it a shot.

He nodded in agreement with Aishe's answer to Artemis' question. He admitted it... there were times he was very tempted to dye his hair a normal color just to see if the sky would fall.

He turned back to Pak, however, stabbing a finger at her.
"You started it. What do you mean I'll pay? If you hadn't threatened me with fake gerbils you wouldn't be in this mess. And besides, I owe you one for retaliating against me when I was completely innocent. Ha."

He chuckled at Eiryk's comment about hazard pay. "No way. You owe me one too, for framing me. Or something. And I don't get hazard pay, so neither will you."

About then Eiryk was monumentally distracted. It seemed like Alexander lost a lot of shyness when given some time, and a little alcohol. Or maybe he had those reversed... some alcohol, and a little time. Well, whichever worked.
Pakpao 13 years ago
"What color is confused?"Â?

Pak was really not liking this idea of Kem coloring his hair. But then again she didn't always do well with change.

But before she could dwell on that too much Artemis was flirting. She tried not to grin, but failed. On the upside of life she didn't giggle or blush. She could be moderately mature.

"Of course you did. I am witty and adorable."Â?

She said sounding all together too pleased with herself.

Alexander and Eiryk were considerably less subtle in their flirting. Pak was rather pleased thought. As much hell as she gave Eiryk he was a good guy and deserved to have some one in his life. And the more she watched Alexander come out of his shell the better she felt about him with Eiryk.

At Kem's threat she picked up her napkin (with her hands) and threw it at him. That was safe and legal with the nice cute little human about.

"When are you going to learn you will always pay?"Â?

That of course lead to her calling into the kitchen after Aishe.

"What shop and what necklace? We should discuss this."Â?

If nothing else it would make a good Christmas present.
Eiryk 13 years ago
Eiryk had opened his mouth to say something to Artemis when Alex found something better to do with his mouth. Caught thoroughly off guard he fell half out of his chair.

"Does this mean you're going to stuff singles down my pants?"Â?

Poor Alexander was never going to get him to shut up, but Eiryk did let him clean up.

After sitting dazed for a second he floundered toward reality and had the good sense to look a little chagrined.

"Warned is fine."Â?

He said with a grin. Artemis hadn't even seen him in action yet. Eiryk had taken out an entire shipments for his studio with one well placed stumble. Why would any one else's livelihood be any different.

But then Kem decided to malign him and that couldn't go unanswered. It would be rude.

"I'm pretty sure it was your own reputation that got you blamed for that minor fiasco. No way for me to have framed you when I hadn't met you before then."Â?

Sipping at his wine, and staring at Alexander, Eiryk hit upon and idea.

"I think we might need to unionize. Obviously she is dangerous. At least the three of us need a contract of some sort with things like hazard pay spelled out."Â?
Artemis Bellezone 13 years ago
Artemis tilted his head at Aishe and Kem, playfully pretending he was perplexed by the idea.

"And pink doesn't give you shock value?"

One of the many good qualities about Meridian is the general acceptance of the people who worked there. Whatever Kem decided, Artemis was sure that those of Meridian would always treat him as the friend and archivist they had come to know and respect.

"Whatever color you choose, or even if you go for a multicolored Mohawk, you will still be expected to show up for work the next morning."

Speaking of multicolored. He turned to Pak and smiled.

"I think confused would be a bit tie-dyed. Now that I think about it. It wouldn't be very confusing if it were a solid color."

Once he had said it, he realized that he had left the door wide open for her. Oh well. He had the long hair, so he half looked the part already. He just needed the sunglasses and a brown fringe vest. One thing I can tell you is you got to be free/ Come together right now.... Fortunately, he didn't start singing Beatles songs at the table. Artemis chuckled at Pak's retort regarding his taste.

"Yes you are. All of those things. And if what I have been hearing since we have been here is to be believed, you also bite, regularly terrorize the archives, and are a general menace in the kitchen. So I suppose you can add fun and entertaining to your list of attributes"

Secretly though, Artemis was beginning to wonder if child-proof cabinet safety locks worked against telekinetics. It was an important thing to know, and keep to oneself. He probably would have continued flirting with Pak a bit more but Alex had decided to lay one on Eiryk. He raised an eyebrow briefly before turning and whispering in Pak's ear.

"I believe he just one upped us. Though he didn't stand on the table, so I think you get more style points for the other night."
Alex Aristos 13 years ago
Alexander laughed at Aishe and shook his head. "All right," he said softly to her. "Let's see if I can hit a 4 or a 5 on the shock scale a different way."

Eiryk was on his guard now so it might be difficult. However, Alex went back out to the dining room table, stood behind Eiryk's chair, and leaned over to grab one of the platters.

While his lips were next to Eiryk's ear he whispered,
"Well I had something other than singles in mind."

And then he was back off into the kitchen. He intended to make good on the promise too. After their company left, of course. What else could top a fun night like this better than being curled up on Eiryk's couch not-watching movies?
