Home Sweet Home?

Virginia had gone well. Chicago had gone better. Maybe it was being back where she belonged but Reign had flown through the tournament undefeated and once again secured her number one ranking. More important than that she'd reunited with her family. It had involved shouting and tears and some knock down drag out fights but by then end of her trip she'd moved out of the hotel and was staying with her folks again. It felt good Maybe next time she'd be able to reconcile with Vince. Reign did miss her ex and his twin, a great deal, they had been the best of friends and it wasn't worth losing them for any reason.

Of course all wasn't roses. Her advisor had some strong words about her dissertation and had told Reign in no uncertain terms he wanted things fixed and to see her and the paper again in three months or sooner. He was retiring and determined to get her graduated before he did. She also hadn't worked up the nerve to tell the family she was seeing Bastian again but you couldn't have everything.

But now she was sound asleep, on the couch she hadn't even made it to her bed. It was her first night home after months away and she was just happy to be back. She'd call Lupo in the morning and catch up with him. Its not like she hadn't called but Reign wasn't much of a phone person and so a lot had been left unsaid.

It was hearing Sirius bark that woke her up. Bleary eyed she felt around for her glasses and found the clock. Who the hell would be at the door at this hour it was the middle of the god damned night. She stumbled to her feet with the idea of going to bed, confidant that the mutt had scared off what ever it was, after all who messed with a house that you could hear that bark coming from? Granted she had told Bastian that she would be home some time late tonight, but she'd also said not to come over as she didn't know for sure when she'd be home. That and Sirius always seemed to know when it was Bas at the door rather than some one else. So Reign had dismissed that idea. What ever it was though...

Heading to her bedroom Reign noticed Sirius wasn't following her. She turned and saw him still glued to the front door, hackles raised and growling low and menacing. That bothered her, but she didn't have much time to dwell on it. The door suddenly burst open, little bits splintering from the frame. What the hell! It was an odd surreal experience to see a black clad figured standing unwelcome in her foyer.

"What the FUCK! Who... GET OUT!"Â?

She bellowed at the top of her lungs. Sirius seemed to have similar sentiments for after only a moment's hesitation he'd gone into protective mode. Reign had known Vince had gotten him for her because he worried when she was on the road but she'd never truly appreciated the massive Sheppard as anything other than companionship until now.

Apparently this is what happened when you were out of town for months at a time people decided to break in. Granted Reign was scared, terrified really but she knew she had to keep her head. She had no idea if this guy was armed or what he wanted that didn't stop her, however, from hurling the first thing she could lay her hands on at him. It was a half full glass of wine she'd poured herself before passing out on the couch. Reign had a good arm and hit squarely and soundly hit her target, bouncing off and shattering on the floor. She was reaching for something else to throw when the arcadia door leading to the back yard broke with a huge crash. Before she could react to that another black figure had grabbed her wrenching one arm behind her while pulling her towards him and placing her in a choke hold so tight Reign could barley breath.

"Call him off."Â?

The command was growled in her ear. Reign attempted to comply but couldn't choke out the words. The hold around her neck was loosened some what.

"Call him off!"Â?

It took two tries but Reign managed to gasp out command and Sirius, obviously not happy, obeyed.

"Didn't expect you home. Well you just play nice and we won't hurt you."Â?

Reign didn't believe that for a second, but also didn't think it was a wise idea to call him on it. If she stayed calm maybe she could find a way to run or call the police. Her cell was still in the pocket of her jeans and still had a charge, she just had to get away from them for a bit. For now though if she could keep them from hurting her or the dog, who was still growling menacingly, that would be a plus.

Probably because he was concerned about her, but fighting the urge to take over, in Bastian's mind the police procedure didn't really take long at all. He did feel a little relieved though, once they were gone, and nothing else traumatic had occurred.

Watching Reign fall back onto the sofa, he wanted to join her, but refrained. In his head he was trying to decide if he should drive back to his place and pick up some lumber to board up her house with, or just stay there till morning and do it then. He certainly couldn't think of any place that would be open this early in the morning, where he could get the materials he needed. And he had quite a bit of wood scraps in his storage shed, that would work fine.

When Reign brought up the possibility of having some wood in her shed, Bastian moved over to stand in front of her, as she sat on the couch.

He smiled down at her tenderly. At that precise moment, Reign looked so much like she did when he first met her. There was that vulnerability about her that he rarely saw anymore, but that had captured his heart in college. Yet before he had time to revel in it, her other, stronger side, pushed its way in, and he could see she was ready to get down to business again.

"Better idea...if its locked, why don't you give me the key and let me go look, while you make some coffee? I know I could use a cup, and there's really no need for you to be out there wandering around in the dark. I'm sure I'll be able to find whatever we can use if its out there.

When thats done we can decide if we will be staying here or going back to my place."

Though he purposely used the word we, since there was no question in his mind that they were staying together, for a while at least, he still referred to home as 'his place'. He had asked her to make his place theirs, but until she made that decision on her own, he wasn't going to bring it up again.

Reign couldn’t help but grin, probably the first time she’d smiled all night. Grabbing Bastian’s hand, she pulled him down onto the couch and kissed him. It was a soft, tendered rather chaste kiss but long over due. Wouldn’t it have been nice to have come home slept and then seen her guy the next day, no drama perfectly normal a nice calm welcome home reunion type thing? As much as she was hating this whole experience, however, she really couldn’t convey how much it meant to her to have him there and to have basically saved her ass.

Several long seconds passed where she just rested her head on his shoulders before she scrambled to her feet to look for the keys.

“I think I tossed them over… here! Found them.”

Reign triumphantly pulled the keys out from under a pile of mail and tossed them to Bastian.

“There should be a flash light just inside the right hand side. It’s no hardware store but I think… think… there should be some OK stuff in there.”

Sirius was not leaving her side and Reign was starting to both worry and not know what to do with that but it could be sorted out later. Right now, she was more than grateful for both her guys.

“Regular or decaf? I’m not sure I need any more jolts to my system but something hot isn’t a bad idea at all.”

With his answer, she set about making a pot. She also set about digging out her vacuum and cleaning up the broken glass as best she could as Bastian rummaged in the shed. The bouncing light and interrupted beam of the flashlight were oddly reassuring even though she couldn’t hear a damned thing over the hoover.

"You taste good."

He murmured after she pulled him down to join her, and kissed him.

He finally felt himself begin to relax, and his muscles seemed all the happier for it. Seeing her grin, he believed it was at him, and it did his heart wonders to know his being there was what she wanted. Too soon though she was up and searching for the key to the shed, and he was standing again as well.

Catching the keys, Bastian jumped up of the couch, and headed out the back of the house through the broken door. He yelled out 'regular' as he exited, knowing full well even two, or three cups wouldn't effect his metabolism. Bastian had always been a regular coffee drinker, but since his blood changed with the wolf virus, it took a great deal more of every thing before he felt the effects.

Entering the shed he reached for the flashlight, right where Reign said it would be, and flipped it on. There was a lot in the shed, and what there was showed a little of Reign's disorganization, but that didn't stop Bastian from quickly finding the wood, hammer, and nails. To really do an adequate job of boarding the house up, he kept looking, hoping to find some screws, and a screw driver. Oh to have his electric tools right now, the job would have been made much easier. Yet it really wasn't that big a deal to use his arm strength in lieu of an electric screwdriver.

Dropping a handful of screws and the philip-head into his pocket, Bastian carried the two pieces of plywood back to the house and proceeded to board up the window first. In less than a half hour he had finished the job, returned the tools to the shed, locked up and re-entered the house through the front door. A quick clean up in the bathroom, and he was back sitting on the couch.

"All done. That should do a good enough job until we can get the door fixed and the window replaced. "

He watched the doorway, waiting for Reign to return.

“Adrenalin. Adds flavor.”

This was as close to domestic as Reign had been in a long… LONG time. However, while Bastian got things boarded up she got things cleaned up. She’d broken a couple of things in her mad throwing, there was the glass, the lovely wood splinters from the front door not to mention the mess of books and pillows. Still and all it gave the coffee a chance to brew.

She couldn’t remember if Bas liked his black or not. Something in the back of her head said black so that’s what she brought him, her own had sugar and cream in it. Reign –could- drink her coffee black, she just didn’t like to. Setting the two mugs down she sprawled back on the sofa.

“It looks sturdy enough for now. I guess I’ll need to find a contractor or maybe the store will install the new door, hell doors, that front one’s got to go too, I think I can do the window myself.”

She sighed, a bit depressed by the work ahead.

She also noticed the clock. It was so… late? Early? Hell it was hard to tell, this was worse than being on tour.

“I don’t think it’s worth heading to your place now, do you? Maybe tomorrow night? I’m sure most of this shit can’t be done in one day.”

"Mmmm, good"

Bastian almost moaned in his delight after the hot, slightly bitter liquid oozed down his throat.

"I can call my man, if you'd like. He does exemplary work, and stands behind it. He can put all this right again, and I'm sure he'll do what he can to get right on it...?"

The contractor Bastian had hired to build his house, had subsequently done a myriad of other things around his place, and everything had been done with much of the same craftsmanship of long ago. The man never cut corners, and while he charged well for his work, it was also fair for the quality.

Coffee in one hand, Bastian's other arm was around Reign's shoulders, his fingers teasing the soft curls at the nape of her neck.

"No. I'm sure we'll be quite safe here tonight, and as long as you're not spending the rest of the night alone, I'm content."

And coffee or not, while settled there on the couch so comfortably, Bastian could feel a sleepy lethargy begin to creep over him.

Yet there was the issue of sleeping arrangement to be made.

"May I escort m'lady to her bedchamber?"

Though thoughts of sex were far from even his mind at the moment, Bastian didn't consider NOT sleeping with Reign. It was probably highly presumptuous of him, but that was how he was when it came to her. He could and had been giving her ample space lately, yet that didn't mean he didn't want to hold her in his arms tonight. He was there to offer her safety and comfort, but selfishly he also needed her closeness now. Knowing there had been a chance this evening could have turned out horrifyingly different, Bastian refused to consider letting Reign out of his sight.

"I promise...no funny stuff."

His last words were given as reassurance, and he hoped she accepted them.

"I'll call Jack first light, and see what he can do about fixing these things for you."

“Mmmmm lets think about it in a few hours. I’m not sure I could remember my own name right now.”

From being asleep to adrenalin overload, Reign was now crashing hard. She felt moderately safe, and even if she hadn’t there was no way she was going to be able to stay awake.

She did appreciate Bastian’s offer though. Any recommendation was welcome, there was still a matter of price, materials, etc. etc. etc. and she sure didn’t want to try and deal with it now. Maybe she should call the insurance folks first to find out how much would be covered. Ack! Stop thinking about it.

“Yes please. Last time I spent the night on the couch I had a kink in my neck for three days.”

Reign very nearly laughed, she did crack a lopsided grin though. For starters she hadn’t considered Bastian sleeping anywhere other than her bed. For seconds she didn’t –have- anywhere else aside from said couch, which was great for naps but bad for a bed.

Batting her eyes as innocently as possible.

“What no bed time recitals of ‘Who’s on First’? I’m crushed Lupo. Let’s go to bed.”

She pulled herself to her feet, set Bastian’s coffee on the table braced herself and half pulled him to his feet and started towards the bedroom. Sirius trotted on ahead, his bed after all was in there too, and he certainly wasn’t letting either of the two of them go any where without him.

Before she got more than a foot or two away, Bastian bent and scooped Reign into his arms, then followed Sirius to the bedroom.

"Who's on first? Oh...that's a comedy routine by Abbott and Costello, yes, err, no..." Bastian laughed as well, just then making the connection to the 'funny business' he'd referred to. There were still occasional lapses in his understanding of the English language, and America, but they were becoming farther and farther apart.

Entering Reign's bedroom, Bastian placed her on her feet next to the bed, and then went into the bathroom. He had showered earlier in the evening, after he closed the clinic, but wanted to brush his teeth again, as well as take a piss. Unfortunately he hadn't brought a toothbrush, and couldn't remember if Reign would be less than pleased if he used hers.

"Don't suppose you have an extra toothbrush around anywhere?"

He called from the bathroom, after he finished his other business. Washing his hands, then rubbing them over his face while still wet, gave him a small sense of freshness that he normally wouldn't be concerned with, but for some reason was tonight. Looking about the bathroom, Bastian grinned. Reign's home was such an accurate representation of her personality that he didn't find anything about it intimidating. And he had been in some very intimidating bathrooms during his life time...what with pink everywhere, as well as lace, and ruffles...ugh...reminding him of that stomach medicine...Pepto Bismal. But not Reign's bathroom, which was functional, clean, and a little cluttered. To be a true representation there needed a smattering of sex appeal, but he couldn't figure out how that would be conveyed.

Stripping down to his boxer briefs, and appreciating the fact that he decided to wear them today, Bastian folded his clothes and put them on the counter as far from the sink as possible. Running his fingers through his hair, while looking in the mirror, he thought better of it and picked up his clothes to tuck under his arm. Re-entering the bedroom he found a drier place to set them.

Reign just didn’t have the energy to put on her PJs and collapsed on the bed, fully clothed and with the bed still made. She’d put a feather bed topper on recently and it was soft and squishy and more than slightly welcoming.

“Yeah. Left hand drawer of the vanity. Should be one or two in there.”

It was an odd habit but she kept several about and took a new one with her ever time she traveled and threw them out before traveling back home. She’d had her luggage lost and been with out the basics one too many times to take any chances.

Pulling herself up off the bed she rummaged through her dresser drawers to find a clean t-shirt and pajama bottoms, changed right quick, pat the dog, tossed the covers back and practically dived back in the bed.

“Just tell me you don’t need to be any where early tomorrow… er… this morning.”

It was easy enough then to pull Bas into bed and snuggle up against him. That felt good, she was extremely glad he hadn’t left. Reign doubted she’d get any sleep if it was just she and the mutt.
Bastian 16 years ago
He watched her out of the corner of his eyes, as she scampered into the bed. Dropping his clothes in a neat pile, shutting off the light, he was quickly cuddling beside her, again capturing her in the warm circle of his arms. With each passing moment he felt more and more comfortable, and relaxed in the relationship, and thankful for his second chance. He was such a lucky man.

"No...no appointments at all today, and I even called Diane, and let her know I wouldn't be in later, but that she could reach me on my cell, if any emergencies arise. I'm really glad she's worked out so well in the clinic...she's been a tremendous help."

Bastian shifted a little, and moved his pillow to fit better under his head, before he was truly settled, and never once lost his embrace on Reign. The feeling of the two of them like this seemed so utterly natural that he would be surprised if he woke later and wasn't in the same position.

"You doing okay still?"

He murmured against her hair, and then pressed his lips there. She seemed to be doing very well, and Bastian almost didn't ask, but he wasn't quite ready to assume some things.

Her breathing sounded good, and even, and her body wasn't as tense as it had been earlier. Bastian hoped she would fall asleep soon, and her mind and body would have time to rejuvenate.

As far as he was concerned, nestled in snug as he was, he only hoped he could remain awake long enough to follow her into sleep, rather than the other way around.

Point in fact, the last thought he had then was of the two of them sleeping just like this for all future nights to come.

“You are far too efficient. Make me feel like a slacker.”

She muttered into his chest.

Warm, safe, exhausted… but she couldn’t sleep. She was probably putting too much pressure on herself to pass out like she usually did. And then even though her body was wiped out her mind was still going a mile a minute.

It was reassuring to feel Bas shift about and settle in, like proof he planed on staying.

“Not sure exactly what OK is after this sort of thing… but yeah I think so.”

Damned good guy to stick around… hell to take on two men who might have been armed like an idiot. Maybe she’d been a bit rough on him in the past, especially decking like she had in the pool hall. She’d feel bad about that later. Now she was finally getting her mind to slow down.

Yawning she added

“Just don’t go any where.”

It wasn’t like her to be so damned clingy, but right now clingy felt good. Clingy let her sleep. Even after passing into a light sleep she didn’t let go of Bas, he was the ultimate teddy bear.
Bastian 16 years ago
Reign was only a slacker when it came to things that weren't high on her list of priorities. Bastian had no issues with that at all. His priorities and hers often didn't mesh, but that never appeared to cause anything more than a tiny bit of friction, if that. When it came to things that truly counted, he knew she'd do fine. So her comment fell on deaf ears.

He also knew she was likely to reassure him that she was fine, even if she wasn't, at least not totally. Yet he knew better than to just assume things, and relied on her body language as well. She seemed extra cuddly tonight, which he didn't mind in the least, but which gave him a better answer than her less than confident response. He tenderly caresses her back, and arm, as she began to really relax, and fall asleep.

"No, Cara, I'm here for the duration...I promise. Shhh...let's get some sleep..."

He wasn't sure if she had heard him, but hoped his warm arms, holding her close, would give her the answer she wanted.

Eventually Bastian followed Reign in sleep, and for the most part slept deeply, and continually. He did wake once, when she seemed to stir, but then wasn't sure if it had been her, or something else, possibly outside, that had woken him. He listened for a few seconds, heard Sirius steady breathing, and figured he must have been dreaming. Before long at all, he was fast asleep once again, his arms still around his love.
