More history in the making.

By the time Bastian had reached the waterfront, he had finally begun to feel the strain. He was in the best physical shape he'd ever been in, but that didn't mean he had limitless energy. The good news was his ability to rejuvenate, and just by slowing down he could feel his muscles respond favorably.

He pulled up short when the familiar scent of a pack mate hit him. It was unexpected, and in light of their previous meeting Bastian wasn't sure what he might be facing now. The thrill of running into the female again was there, but it was purely due to the fact that he recognized her now, and was interested in getting to know her better. The scents of others were around as well, but much fainter, and vague. He thought she must be alone.

Slowing down to a cautionary walk, Bastian continued to move parallel to the water, seeking his pack mate. He knew he was getting close from the strength of her smell, but because their meeting was not arranged, and he had no idea why she would be there tonight alone, he refrained from dashing in her direction.

As he drew even closer, he recognized the odor of wet skin, and not wet fur. Perhaps she'd come for a swim, though he imagined there must be better places for such activity. This one was certainly a challenge for Bastian's mind, yet he wondered if he would have cared so much, had she been a normal human.

She laughed when he commented on his semi bruised ego. It was in jest but she added a little extra jabbing.

Aw, I'm sure had i been running around in the woods half nude under any other circumstances, i would have been a terrified little sheep.

She stood and stretched her still aching muscles. The quick swim after the change was tough on her but it wasn't anything to worry about. A good night of sleep and she'd be golden.

I am definatly ready to head home. It's been a long evening. If i'm lucky I'll get a couple hours of sleep in before the little one wakes up and wants breakfast.

Pushing her stool in, she concidered his earlier offer about work. It was much more appealing than the cafe. Only a hundred times more appealing, but she didn't want to sound overly eager. Job stability was a treasured thing.

I appreciate the offer at your practice. You definatly sound like you need and extra pair of hands to let you focus on your actual work and not all the side items of the job. I know you said not to answer, but I will think it on it. I don't have much experience but i am a quick learner. But I will let you know ok? Working with animals is very admirable you know. It takes patience to deal with humans, but I think it takes a bigger understanding of humans to work with animals.

She sighed. What a life, to be a vet and live on a big ole farm. That was something outta the movies.

You know the way of course?

"You have a very nice laugh...infectious...maybe now that you and your son are settled in someplace friendly, you'll have reason to use it more."

The sound of a woman's genuine laughter had always caught Bastian's ear, or since his change, and his hearing no longer suffered. Laughter of children, and women was something he hadn't grown up with a lot of, and there was probably the reason he appreciated it so much now.

In Diane's case, she was a lovely young woman, who only looked that much prettier with a smile on her face. He could imagine she must shine when with her son.

Doing a quick clean up of the counter, Bastian grabbed the Hummer keys from the peg near the door, and turned back to Diane.

"Experience...yes, you can pick that up, I'm sure. I'll await your decision."

He was fairly certain he could teach her the basics quick enough, and only hoped she had a somewhat basic knowledge of computers. The software he used was easy as well, and had already been set up to accommodate his business. A few hours of instruction, and he trusted she would be ready to go. After that the job just required some good common sense.

He did rethink that a little...but chose to overlook the incident tonight as any indication of how that reflected on the young woman. That she was a single mother, and had managed to raise her son this far outweighed any difficulty she might be having acclimating herself to pack life, or her wolf condition. He sensed she had a good heart, and strong mind, and overall he just liked her.

"I'm sure the directions will come back to me, once I get on the road." He teased, having been in the vicinity of the pack quarters only hours ago.

Leading her outside, he pulled the locked door closed, and opened the passenger door to the Hummer, helping her up into the vehicle. Though the floor of the monstrosity was considerably higher than your average passenger car, he knew she could have maneuvered it herself. It was just an old habit to offer assistance to woman in certain situations. He would forever open doors, and hold chairs for them. He would always strive to put himself between them, and any perceived danger. He had been raised old school, and it had been second nature for so long now, that it was just as much a part of Bastian as breathing was.

Fortunately, he got very few complaints.

The drive back to the compound was in comfortable silence, peppered slightly with observations, and comments on the view, and surrounding areas. Once they reached Diane's drop off point, Bastian jumped from the Hummer, and sprinted around to the other side.

"I believe this is your stop." He quipped, as he held his hand up to her.

"And one thing I forgot to mention, about the job offer...I'll top whatever you're making now salary wise, provide you with full benefits for you and your son, and I'm sure we can work out a leave schedule that will work for us both." There were other things he would be flexible with as well, but those were his main concerns now, and he needed to make them clear to her.

"So...think about it, and let me know..." Funny, but now that the offer had been made, Bastian was hoping she would accept it. He was looking forward to having someone else, besides the animals, around the place.

He drove a monster of a vehicle and when they arrived back at the compound she readily accepted his hand as she hoped down.

Nice monster truck. She said with a wink.

His offer was almost to good to refuse. She didn't even have insurance as of now. Not that she ever got sick anymore and if she got hurt it didn't take long to fix itself. Her son on the other hand was different. She paid out of pocket for his well visit check ups. The shots alone, they were pricey.

She raised an eyebrow at him.

You can beat two sixty five an hour? It's a tough going rate! Well thank you very much for all your hospitality tonight. It sure beat wandering around out in the woods looking for the correct way out in a tarp. I'm glad we got to know each other more too. There are never enough friendly faces.

'Good looking faces either.' Was what she really wanted to end that sentence with. She held out her arms.

It is my theory that females don't shake hands, we hug.

He just nodded when Diane commented on his truck. He knew it was big, and bought it because it was big, but had long since grown used to its size. There was something comforting in the slightly overwhelming power he felt when behind the wheel, and it was extremely useful when carting animals around. He had a couple other vehicles that he could use, and if he began socializing more, he probably would, but that entailed having them shipped up from Louisiana.

His laughter was completely spontaneous as she joked about her salary, until he reconsidered, and hoped it had been a joke.

“I think I can do a little better, yes.” He grinned, pleased to hear she was taking his offer very seriously. “And I’m also glad to have run into you as well. I’m not a man who usually has a lot of friends, but I do appreciate those I have."

Only halted for a moment, Bastian walked into her hug, and returned it. Though she felt slightly odd in his arms, it was still a nice feeling. Along with not having a lot of friends, Bastian had never been a very demonstrative man, with one exception. Strangely, he found it easier to kiss a woman, than to hug her, feeling the latter held more of a committed connotation. And yet with Diane, he quickly overcame his initial reserve, and enjoyed the expression of friendship.

Realizing someone had to be the first to release, he did, and stepped back a couple spaces.

“That’s a good theory, though not one I would recommend to everyone. You…you seem to have the ability to pull it off though.”

He was in a rare mood, and found teasing Diane to be almost as easy as teasing Reign.

Walking back to his side of the vehicle, Bastian again reinforced his offer.

“I’m glad I could be of assistance, and if I do not hear from you in a few days, don’t think I’ll just give up. When I set my mind to something, I’m a hard one to sway. I’ll know where to find you.”

There was enough laughter in his voice that she would have no reason to fear him, but besides that, in the short time they had spent together, he hoped he had gained a little of her trust. Whether or not she knew it, she had his.

“Take care then.”

He shouted out the window, and drove off slowly, to avoid kicking up any dusk.

She smiled as she watched Bastian drive away with a wave.

Don't worry, I won't be hiding from you. She said into the air.

Turning she walked in the massive building she called home, her head filled with new hopes and curiosities.
