Making the most of a morning (Open)

((Continued from Veggie Table))

Nyra pulled her little yellow car into the parking garage. She and Rachyl climbed out, making their way to the entrance. Soft yellow light streamed in from what looked like skylights and windows. The artist pondered as it did not exactly match the light that they had just left upon entering the garage. How odd she thought before brushing the thought aside.

The women joined the ranks of mall walking senior citizens and stroller pushing mothers as they made their way towards the store. Nyra felt highly selfconcious in this realm, very aware of the faded and frayed outfit. If she did not relax they may have to pick something out for her to continue shopping in.

Rachyl nodded at Nyra's small smile, and returned a wide one of her own. "You can. That one there will probably look good with a white silk blouse or a floral print... Oh maybe even one of those camis you got and some sort of gauzy jacket top."

Rachyl hovered a full rack away from Nyra, barely able to see over the hangers and cloth. She watched as her friend chose skirt after skirt, holding them up to her waist, checking size tags. Some went back on the rack, others went over her arm or into a specially designated pile. A thought occurred to her - neither she nor Meegan had even begun thinking about spring wardrobes, not since they'd decided to have a child. Maternity had become the name of Rachyl's fashion game. She felt a wellspring of happiness burst inside her, and she realized she was looking forward to it.
Nyra 18 years ago
Nyra ended up with four skirts over her arm and five shirts. The brown skirt, black skirt with golden sash belt, a white skirt with beautiful floral painting in black along the knee high hem and a tangarine skirt with a gauzy overlay. The shirts were picked out to match; a patterned brown tunic with three quarter length sleeves, a goldish beaded camisole, a gauzy bronze and gold button down shirt, a white wrap shirt and a matching tangarine gauzy shirt.

Making her way to the fitting room she tried each outfit on. The brown worked but seemed boring to her even though it fit well. Stepping out she awaited Rachyl's comments before returning to try on the next outfit. The black and goldish outfit seemed to look amazing with the skirt's added flares in the hem and the sparkle of beads on the cami. Emerging with a smile she spun for her friends critique before going back for the white outfit. This one looked ok, if not horribly monochrome, but she could possibly dress it up with a colorfull scarf or belt. Shrugging at Rachyl, she spun slowly in the tri-mirrored area.

Returning to the fitting room she put on the tangarine outfit. It was horrible. The shirt was stitched under the bust, but it did not fit Nyra's ample chest. The skirt was too slinky and the bottom solid color lining rode up. Peeking her head out before stepping into the fitting room proper, the artist was shaking her head before she even got to the mirror.

"Who do they design this bust for? Women purchasing a size 14 top with Bcup breasts?!" Tugging at the top and skirt she huffed in annoyance before scurrying back to the dressing room for her clothes. Holding out all the items on their hangers she wiggled the 'keep' hand while placing the 'discards' on the rack designated.

"I like the brown-brown, but there's something too solid about it. We could look for a belt or sash, or an underskirt, or we could have a fabric painting day." She winked at Nyra and nudged her back into the dressing room to wait for the next outfit.

Clapping quietly, she beamed and exclaimed, "The black and gold is wonderful! Definite keeper."

"The white outfit," she pondered, walking around Nyra, "needs a bit of color. White is very difficult to say 'no' to during Spring, but you're not a nun and you're also not in the fifties. Scarf, belt, something. Maybe show a little cleavage with a floral cami or a solid bra? Either way, we'll figure that out later. Next?"

Arching a brow, Rachyl was tempted to ask Nyra to show her, but realized that if she was only comfortable enough to stick her head out, the outfit was probably pretty bad. Then Nyra came out and spun in the triple mirror. "Maybe they used A-cup models this season..." She let her voice trail off as Nyra disappeared again. "It woulda been nice if the seams were below your bustline, not vivisecting it."

When she came out with the skirts and tops, Rachyl handed them off for purchasing.
"Alrighty. Skirts and tops. Let's go somewhere else. Nordstrom's?"
Nyra 18 years ago
Smiling at her friend, Nyra gladly nodded at anywhere, not here. It was difficult to find something she liked in this store. Though maybe next 'season', whenever that was, it would improve. Again the two women did their thing at a nearby cashier before walking back into the mall to the next large store.

Nordstoms was fancy. Nyra walked behind Rachyl taking it all in. Finally they found the women's section and began looking through the offerings. An armfull later, Nyra headed for the fitting room as her fashion guide picked up several more items along the way.

Nyra's first choice was a pair of cargo capri's. They were loose and flowy linen with a drawstring waist. Pulling them on was easy and they fit her well. She wondered if Rachyl would think it a good idea to get several in different colors other than turquoise. Pulling on a blue and white print top that had a scoop neck and three quarter sleeves, the artist stepped out to show her find.

Rachyl had stopped in front of a large sign just outside the fitting areas.

Rachyl stared at the sign and shook her head. "Interestingly enough, Gothic-Ah has had similar rooms in their boutiques for more than a year."

When Nyra came out, distracting her from her "haha we did it first" mentality, she smiled at the options presented.
"The turquoise is nice, but it doesn't quite go with that top. Maybe find something more teal for the pants? But we can always find a top to match those pants, too. Do you like those pants? They look comfortable." Rachyl approached Nyra and with a "please excuse me" look, spun her gently. Sliding the tips of her fingers into the rear waistband, she tugged on them gently. "Hmm, pretty solid drawstring. No belt loops?" Her fingers quested around the bumpy rounded edge of the fabric. "No belt loops. Well, I imagine there's other pairs around here with loops, especially if you plan on filling the pockets." She moved back in front of Nyra with a "hmm, these are really good" appraising look. "Otherwise, these might make nice painting pants, give you places to hide brushes and such?"
Nyra 18 years ago
Nyra stood calmly as Rachyl tugged and poked the pants. All giggles were restrained but her smile held them clearly for all to see. The fashion guru's comments confused her though.

"Why do I have to have belt loops?" She tried to recall if she even owned a belt that was not just a strip of fabric around her but could not remember. These pants were so incredibly comfortable, loose and neat. More were definately on the list.

Returning to the dressing room she put on the next outfit, a pair of slacks in a dark olive color and a white button down top. She emerged from the dressing room sad. The top was pretty but gapped open at the buttons. Just who did they make tops for these days. The slacks were nice fitting, though tight across her rear. The cuffs were beyond hitting the floor but she did not want to roll them up before Rachyl had a chance to see them. Overall she was unhappy with the entire look. Shaking her head she left the mirror area to return to the dressing stall.

Eleven outfits later, Nyra started to tire. She had several in the 'buy' pile, including long crinkle skirts, knee length skirts that flared outwards and capris. Tops to match also found their way into the pile, several wrap shirts, one peasants blouse and two shear overtops with matching camis.

Falling into the chair next to Rachyl, she looked over at her friend and asked hopefully.
"Smoothie time?"
Rachyl 18 years ago
"Well, we don't want you cutting yourself in half by trying to overtighten your drawstring to keep your overweighted pockets up where they belong..." She realized Nyra might not understand what she was saying, so she clarified, "When I used to wear cargos on a regular basis, I always filled the pockets too-full with heavy stuff, and unless I wore a belt, they'd always be showing more than I wanted."

She saw Nyra's obvious disappointment regarding the available choices. Rachyl thought the white-atop-olive outfit would have been a good choice, but the chest of the top just wasn't built for a woman of Nyra's bust. They might need to look somewhere with a better selection of plus sizes. "We can make note of the manufacturer and line, if you want, and see if a plus-sized store has something similar. That one would have been cute, too."

She watched as Nyra seemed to be picking outfits and parts of outfits that were out of her norm, and yet still what Rachyl imagined she'd feel comfortable in. That was a major part of their outing; stretching Nyra's comfortability boundaries. She didn't expect Nyra ever to feel comfortable in the wide range of lingerie and otherwise slinky or possibly naughty outfits she'd become accustomed to... But then, 'most' women used those strictly for titillation and excitement.

Rachyl wondered if, she could go back in time, her "old self" from even three years ago would believe the truth of her current reality, in March 2006.

She doubted it.

When Nyra flopped down next to her, she grinned at the tired request.
"Smoothie and lunch, if you feel up to it. Then we can try a couple more stores or hit Gothic-Ah for the tour. Up to you."
Nyra 18 years ago
Realizing she had a dozen new outfits perked her up slightly. Some were not suitable for day today type wear but for the most part she had lots of things now that looked good even though they were not what she normally wore.

"If we grab a smoothie, then hit that plus store, Avenue I think it was, we could finish up here and head to Gothic-ah after lunch. That is if its ok waiting another 30 minutes or there abouts."

Together they made their way to the cashier and again Nyra made delivery arrangements while Rachyl paid. Back out in the mall they walked towards the food court.
Rachyl 18 years ago
"I want a banana strawberry cherry yogurt smoothie with raspberries and sprinkles!" Rachyl had been having an odd fruit craving of late - probably because she and Meegan had not had easy access to their old salad lunches - and she shook her head at her cravings. "Not even pregnant yet," she thought with a sigh.

Walking arm in arm with Nyra, she looked up at her artistic friend. The smile of accomplishment on her face wasn't quite the same as it was when she finished a piece... But it made the designer's assistant happy. She had accomplished most of her goals today. And before lunch!
"Your plan sounds perfect."
Nyra 18 years ago
Nyra had to giggle at Rachyl's odd smoothie, but if it made her friend happy then it was good in her eyes. When her turn came she placed her just as picky but not quite as fruity order. "Strawberry pineapple smoothie with orange juice, NO dairy and wheat germ."

Once they got their drinks and began slowly making their way to the store Nyra had spotted earlier that day. Her smoothie was perfect, cold and icy but with a sweet tangy zip and she sipped it gratefully. It was a large mall and a small smoothie so both women finished their drinks just as they came to Avenue. Inside the store looked like most other places, though the sizes appeared large. They had button down tops, tunics and see through gauze shirts over camis just like Penny's had.

Stepping inside Nyra was pleased to find that her shirt size of 14/16 was the lowest and was almost always one on the rack or shelf. Picking out several blouses and even a pair of pants, she made her way to the dressing rooms. These opened up to the store proper so she would have to brave it and show Rachyl and the entire store.

The jeans actually fit loosely but were two inches too long, making Nyra wonder if they had a short or petite version of them. The button down blouse did not gap at the chest and was an amazing pink cotton that ended mid elbow. Stepping out, she twirlled as gracefully as possible in too long pants with a big smile on her face.

"Mind bringing me more? I like this store."

Back into the dressing room she went, to try on a gauze top over a cami or a lacy top or the pretty embelished tunic in yellow. Decisions decisions!
Rachyl 18 years ago
Rachyl briefly wished she'd gotten a larger smoothie. The craving was abated, for now. The raspberries were a bit of a pain; she just popped the top off and using a combination of the straw and her fingernails was able to enjoy the little fruit globs. "I think I might be having Meegan come down here to get me some of these when the cravings really start," she quipped.

Avenue seemed to be a store almost tailor-made for Nyra. Larger sizes, colors that she liked... Rachyl was at once chiding herself for not bringing her here at first, as well as congratulating herself for saving the best option for last.

To see Nyra filling her arms as they moved to the back of the store and the dressing rooms, Rachyl quieted the giggle that threatened to overtake her appraising mindset. Instead, she settled for a quiet, fruity 'urp' while Nyra disappeared into the dressing rooms.

She caught the attention of a passing sales girl and told her they'd likely be spending some time hogging a dressing room. The girl responded with a strange look, glancing down at Rachyl's diminutive frame, then a rack of nearby clothes, a quick shrug, and she turned away with a nod. If there was one thing Rachyl learned recently that she disliked it was stupid assumptions by unimaginative salespeople.

She sat straight when Nyra exited the dressing room. The jeans were a perfect fit - well except for the length, but the seamstresses at the factory could take care of that - and the pink button down made Nyra's fading-copper hair pop. Her eyes shone brightly from her face, and it was the first time in the whole trip Rachyl saw her friend truly happy at something she'd tried on.
"That's wonderful! Don't worry about the length, we can take care of that easy-peasy. More what? Pants, blouses, wraps, gauzytops, skirts?"
Nyra 18 years ago
Bouncing excitedly on her toes the artist looked around the store. She had only taken in three outfits, all slacks, jeans and capris with tops that buttoned down. Her original plan had been to see if the hardest things to find were available here. Beyond pleasantly surprised at the fit she scanned the store for more.

Pointing at things she named them off for Rachyl.
"Gauzy skirt and top in cream, wrap skirt in black print and cute tank with see through over-tunic to match, collared shirt, demin skirt, pink pants, embroidered tank top, one of those trendy upside down V shirts in purple, and a crinkle tank."

Bitting her lip before she returned to the dressing room she smacked her forehead with her hand. "If you dont mind, please and thank you!"

Smiling sheepishly as she belatedly remembered her manners she returned to the tiny dressing room to try on her capris and lace top.

Rachyl dutifully gathered the requested items and brought them to the dressing room. She knocked, and waited until Nyra opened the door.

She was honestly surprised at the sudden rush of fashion requests Nyra was making. In the previous stores, she'd been reluctant, almost fearful or panicking. But here, she seemed almost at home. Was it the styles? The sizes? The atmosphere? Rachyl honestly didn't know. She might have to ask Nyra about it. Or maybe Meegan.

Rachyl didn't really feel out of her element, having metamorphosed from an interior designer and realtor, to a fashion designer's assistant. They were similar in that they expressed someone's personality... But maybe Rachyl had been wrong in taking her to Victoria's first? She couldn't think of anywhere better to get an accurate measure of her friend. On top of that, she'd hoped the artist's sensuality would get a jump start to help her selections of the day.

Her impression of the whole Personal Shopper experience was that it was meant to be a full makeover, including hair style and makeup habits; Rachyl knew at the beginning and still held firm that to enact such changes on Nyra McGurn at such an early stage would be a Bad Thing(TM). She knew, too, that Meegan would agree with her. But then, from what she understood, this was the first occurrence of the Personal Shopper, so it was a learning experience for them all.

She handed the clothes to Nyra and took out the "yes" choices when the door opened.
Nyra 17 years ago
Happily Nyra tried on each outfit and modeled for Rachyl. This store made her feel petite! Everything in it was geared for women sizes 14 to 30. Since she was now a 14 that put her at the low end. Of course the styles were flattering for her figure and the tops were generous enough. Picking the best she wound up with eleven outfits in the Buy pile.

Grinning she put her clothes back on and bounced out to her fashion guru. Sweeping her up in a hug, Nyra kissed Rachyl's cheek soundly before gushing all over her.
"This was the best! Look at the pile of yes's! Thank you so much Rachyl."

Knowing it would be impolite to talk about how good these clothes and this store made her feel about her size, she simply smiled as she dumped the large pile onto the counter and wandered to the shoes they had displayed. Plucking up a cute sling sandel she tried it on before shaking her head and looking at a pretty low heeled slip on. The later she carted to the desk before wandering to the lingerie.

They had a corner of the store devoted to undergarments, with most of them being plain, serviceable while still pretty and colorfull. Nyra picked up a few of the cute boy short panties, like the kind Connie wore but in her size. Since she had gotten a slew of bras already from VS's she did not bother looking at the offerings here. But made mental note, which she needed to write down soon, that they had a larger selection in her size here than the other store. Plucking up a beautiful royal blue satin sleep set, long tank tunic and tap pants, she went back to the busy cashier.

Laughing she bounced on her toes, thrilled with the entire day.
Rachyl 17 years ago
Rachyl was still floating with the "super happy Nyra" feeling as she signed the credit slip and the artist arranged delivery.

Hiding a giggle at her friend's bounciness, she instead smiled and gave her thanks to the women who helped bag up their purchases. Turning to the taller woman, they linked arms and exited the store.
"Should we stop by Modell's to get you a helmet? You're floating and I don't want you to run into any ceiling fixtures."
Nyra 17 years ago
Bumping her hip against Rachyl's as they exited the shop, the artist rolled her eyes and giggled. When they were finally several stores down she allowed herself to gush all about the place and why it made her so happy.

"I dont think I have ever gone into a store and felt petite. That store made me feel petite. Everywhere I have ever shopped made me feel overweight and unattractive. There they had flattering clothes in my sizes and bigger! Thank you so much for taking me there. That was so much fun but I dont need a helmet, I can keep my feet on the ground now."

While the bouncing stopped her happy smile and more confident pace showed the results the shopping experience clearly on the woman. Walking down the mall with her head held high and sparkling joy shining from her very pores.

"Lunch?"
Rachyl 17 years ago
Rachyl made a mental note for the next time she took someone on their Personal Shopper trip: Go to a store that is more likely to carry the Shopper's sizes, to help prevent possible shock. She kicked herself repeatedly (mentally, of course, as they descended on the escalator) for not taking into account Nyra's... physical state. When she looked at the artist, she didn't see a large woman. She saw a vibrant, intelligent, creative woman who seemed to be comfortable in just about anything she wore - whether it was paint-stained or brand new. And she knew too that she thought Nyra was amazingly attractive, though the Oregonian might not see that in herself. Her lover did, though. Perhaps they would grow together and Nyra might learn to appreciate her true beauty.

When Nyra stopped her for the query of "lunch" she almost found herself speaking her thoughts aloud. Instead, she managed a slowly accelerating series of nods. When she spoke, she simply said,
"Your choice, my treat."
Nyra 17 years ago
Walking happily to the mall map displayed in a triangular kiosk. Nyra looked at the food options with enthusiasm. Talking outloud she contemplated lunch.

"We could pick anything from the foodcourt and sit in the central area. Or we could go to one of the restaurants in here. Though I would love some japanese food. Do you happen to know someplace to get miso soup and soba noodles?"

She laughed at herself. Why she expected Rachyl to know this was beyond her, maybe because the fashion guru just spent the morning knowing everything Nyra had a question about and even answers to questions she didnt even know she had!

"I can be just as happy at anyplace if it has a nice salad bar though."
Rachyl 17 years ago
"Unfortunately, my experience with Oriental Cuisine is shamefully lacking. You'd have to point me in that direction. As far as the rest, Saladworks is always nummy, even if I do overdo it with their fresh rolls."

She felt almost embarassed that, until six months ago, she'd never had Oriental food of any type. She decided she didn't need to burden Nyra with such a weighty admission. Instead, she commented, "You'd think a mall this size would have something Japanese, or even vegan, but then, I admit, I don't eat here much." She shrugged and smiled up at Nyra. "Then again, Mall food courts are about what works. Or so I've been told. A vegan restaurant is too risky in such a heavily trafficked mall... Though it would be interesting to try."

Rachyl had been impressed with the quality of the food she'd had earlier that morning. It had filled her quite well, even to the point of enjoying it immensely, and she decided she'd have to take Meegan there once or twice.
Nyra 17 years ago
Tapping her finger against her lips, Nyra thought a moment. She knew the mall information desk was just around the corner and perhaps they could give the ladies some information. Waving her hand in the general direction she told Rachyl her plan. "Lets go see what Information says."

They found the desk easily and behind it were two elder women chatting while they knitted. Smiling at them, the artist went up to the desk boldly. "Good afternoon, I was hoping to speak to someone about food options and opinions."

Midge, the woman with the brown tinted helmet of hair introduced herself and her companion Shirley. They ran down the lists of places to eat in the mall and close by, stating their preferances and their families particular likes and dislikes of the places. Nyra got a word in edgewise finally and asked about japanese places. Soon the ladies were discussing the pros and cons of sushi and miso salad dressing. By the time they left, Nyra was slightly fuzzy as to why they had walked up there to begin with but they had a name of two places to try.

Finding a pay phone near by, she flipped through the phone book and pulled up the number of one of the restaurants. Dialing on her cell phone, she asked the person who answered if they offered any vegan options. The response was not good, even their miso soup was flavored with benito flakes. Thanking the young woman politely, she tried the next restaurant. This time they hit the jackpot. Not only did this place not use fish in everything they had a wide array of veggie options. Getting directions from the mall, Nyra hung up and grinned at Rachyl.

"That was a challenge! Ready to try this place out? Sounds interesting."
