Updates

Chris sat in his office and looked over the recent reports from MARI and Alfarinn. The Elder had been away quite a bit lately but that was part of his job. Somehow the young looking blonde managed to stay in the know about the workings of his people while his sister ran Meridian like a well oiled clockwork.

The slender security chief read cryptic notes about a new resident named Aishe and situation concerning a new member of the 'organization' named Nicolae. From long experience in dealing with the outside communications of his superior he understood that further information was likely possible through MARI. These inquiries gave him some interesting information indeed. The Egyptian girl was a human on a mission according to the AI who had seen to part of the girl's settling in to a room in Liefde and Nic was advised to stay in the Towers because he had bitten the wrong person. Both situations could be a great deal of trouble and though he trusted Alfarinn's empathy as far as the girl went, Chris felt he should investigate more personally. The other situation would have to wait until Alfarinn was able to speak to Ellis though he would offer his support when the time came to confront her if that was how the elder wished to deal with the matter.

He tilted his head up slightly and spoke into the empty room

"Mari, has Nic been made aware of Alfarinn's plans to speak with the Tacharan woman?"

MARI pondered the Security Chief's question for the nano second it took her to call up the information.

"Kem relayed that Nic has been told Alfarinn's plans to speak with Ellis and has accepted a job helping in the archives."

She waited patiently on a wall screen in case he had further questions, one eyebrow arched delicately in mild curiosity.

"Ah"

Christian nodded, by this time no longer surprised by the AI's sudden appearance on the wall. So Nic was given a job? That was good thinking and it was likely to keep him busy and allow him to make some friends among the Nachton Evenhet as well. According to the file on him that MARI had called up for him, the young vampire was new to the area.

"Is he there now?"

He doubted that there was anything further for him to do than what Kem and Alfarinn had already done but he could look in on the new employee for his own peace of mind.

MARI scanned the buildings in order to confirm the information she already knew.

"No, Nicolae Lache is not within the towers."

She had monitored the man leaving the building through various cameras within the place and had needed to use no further sensors at her disposal in order to watch his progress. Having no orders to prevent him from leaving, she had not called anyone to stop him.

MARI waited estimating the likely responses this answer was to receive and comparing it to her files on Crispin Staubbach, also known as Christian Bern.

Christian narrowed his eyes and pressed his lips firmly together before taking a deep breath and calmly continuing his questions. If the boy wanted to get himself killed there was nothing they could do about it but it was a poor way to repay his clan's aid by going out where he could get caught when he was asked to stay inside. If the fool got himself kidnaped there would be hell to pay in order to get him back and Christian doubted Alfarinn would agree that the kid wasn't worth retrieving.

He sighed inwardly perhaps even he wouldn't agree with that but this Nic better have one hell of a reason for risking not only his life but potentially that of his elder and other members of the clan that Alfarinn might take in order to aid in the solving his problem with the rogue Tacharan.

"Did he state a reason for leaving? Send a note to Alfarinn telling him that his new caged bird has flown the coop and let Kem know as well."

The Egyptian seemed to be involved in this somehow and Chris could only guess that either he had made friends with Nic or was asked to watch over him, either way he would probably want to know that the boy was gone.

Turning his thoughts to the other newcomer, the blonde stood, clasping his hands behind his back, and looked at the computerized woman.

"Am I safe to assume that this Aishe is still within the building or has there been a mass exodus I was not made aware of?"

MARI answered the multiple questions with an even tone while adding Christian's response to her private files concerning his psychology. She had been eighty percent certain of his reaction but that left a large room for error as far as she was concerned. Smiling pleasantly at the Security Chief, she wondered briefly what the members of Evenhet would think of being a part of her own observations. It was quickly dismissed as not an issue. She had been instructed to observe and this was simply following her orders.

"No reason was given to me nor has any reason been registered by other sources."

If the new resident gave a reason with someone else then it was one given outside her knowledge.

"Both messages have been sent."

She blinked once at Christian and pretended not to understand humor in his question.

"Aishe Nevrat is currently in the gym and there has been no mass exodus of the Towers since 1985 when there was a threat of fire. It was before my time but I would be surprised if you were not given notice of the event when it occurred. "

Christian looked at the AI for a solid moment at the mention of the fire that had caused the building to be evacuated. He then strode into his bedroom to change into clothes suitable for heading to the gym.

"I was the one that alerted everyone to evacuate the building."

He stated the information over his shoulder not entirely certain what she would do with it nor fully caring. As much as machines interested him, he had been very wary of the heavy use of an AI for the security and maintenance of the building. Despite his misgivings MARI was created and installed into her current position. She continued to take on roles as they found more things for her to do and Christian had to work very closely with her, originally much to his dismay.

It had taken him a while to get used to the computerized woman's presence and, if such a thing were possible, odd sense of humor. She was reliable beyond a human or vampire's ability, and from everything Christian had seen, the AI was loyal to Meridian and Evenhet. He had watched her like a hawk in the beginning for any signs of suspicious behavior or lack of competence in doing a sentient being's job. It was through such observation that he was forced to conclude that she was indeed sentient in her own way and a valuable asset to his clan, as such he treated her as a member of Evenhet like any other.

The fire that had been started was an electrical fire that began in one of the shafts and it had been on a security sweep of the building that smoke had been noticed by one of his men. He had alerted maintenance and then ordered everyone to leave the buildings until the damage could be repaired and the smoke cleared. It had not yet reached something critical but there was smoke filling the airways and it would have been only a matter of time before it filled the rooms causing the humans harm. The fire itself had destroyed several pieces of machinery which, while costly, were relatively easy to replace.

Slipping into a crisp white cotton gi, He picked up his gym bag and headed out the door.

"Should there be one in the near future I trust you will let me know."

MARI added the Christian's statement concerning the fire to her information on it. It had been in the report that the smoke had been seen by a member of security and it would have been a logical conclusion that Christian had ordered the evacuation which had made the statement all the more pointed to her thinking; however, a first hand report of the event was better than her, admittedly very logical and astute, judgments on the matter.

She raised an eyebrow at him as he left the room and responded to his assumption.

"I am ordered to alert you at the same time I advise the elders in such matters."

That was a fact that she was certain he was fully aware of but since he chose to question it then she chose to state the obvious; sometimes the humans and vampires had a hard time remembering things. MARI wondered if a more efficient use of their internal memory could not be found and decided to look through Meridian's medical files and research the subject. They were flawed creatures with memory leaks and various system failures as they got older but she understood that they did not have the benefit of a team of scientists supporting their upgrades and looking after their well being.

Blinking out of his office, MARI went about her many other duties along with her new found interest.
