The Blind Leading the Blind (attn: Eiryk)

It was a rare night when Rowan found himself off of work without Cris. Granted, tonight wasn't a full night. Rowan had a couple of hours to kill before his shift began and as much as he wanted to spend them with his partner, Eiryk had asked him for some of his time and Rowan couldn't turn down a request from his long-time friend. He was certain Cris would have tried to meet him for at least some of his short break from work but he had had to apologize to his lover and decline. Cris, as always, was understanding, but Rowan resolved to make it up to him when they were together again... many times.

He'd met Eiryk at the waterfront and they'd gone down the dock to Rowan's ships, located at the very end due to their size. It made it easy to don swim trunks and dive right off the back, not having to worry about much more maritime traffic. Up on deck they had a bottle of Eiryk's mead, chilling and ready to be opened.

Rowan didn't press Eiryk for information right away. Clearly his friend wanted to talk about something specific and while Rowan might tease the hell out of him on a regular basis, he did care about Eiryk. So for the time being they simply swam until they felt relaxed, indulging in their usual friendly competition, head-dunking, and faux-drowning with neither of them really getting the upper hand.

It was good therapy, Rowan figured, for both of them. He missed Cris, and he smiled to himself at the adage that absence could make the heart grow fonder. He could not get fonder of Cris. Tonight, absence was making the heart lonely and more than a little horny. He did his best to push down those feelings though; he wanted to give Eiryk his full attention and, well... maybe he could channel the lonely and the horny into a really good 'I missed you' snuggle with Cris very soon.

Eiryk didn't say anything more on that topic. It wasn't that he doubted Rowan's promise he just didn't know that -he'd- still be there. More than that though, Eiryk didn't want to think about it it was more than a little depressing morbid even.

"Yes you would, if there was a good reason you would and you know it."

He only laughed at the satin and lace comment. He had good legs and as long as it was tasteful he'd rock it. Not that he you know did the drag thing but when push came to shove you did what you had to do.

"Fine be a groomzilla, be Godzilla, be whatever kind of 'zilla' you want. I'll still kick your ass if you make my planning difficult. And do make sure the gown you pick out for me shows me off properly. You know if I'm going to do something I like to do it right."

He was getting a head of himself and he knew it. He also knew that Alex wouldn't be at all surprised to find that he'd planed very last detail before even proposing. It took some one special to put up with all his... well with him. It must take some one special, it had never happened before.

Still Eiryk waited for Rowan to resurface before splashing him for that comment.

"Of course not!" Eiryk sounded slightly indignant, but playfully so. "It is just a nice fringe benefit is all."

"Oh, Godzilla," Rowan said brightly. "That would make a great wedding. We can have a little Tokyo model city at our feet and go stomping around... you might be onto something there."

After his quick dunk he resurfaced to a splash in the face and laughed at it; he had earned it, really.
"Fringe benefit? Poor Alex. You're gonna be one of those needy little wives who's constantly planning your second marriage, third marriage, anniversary of the first shag, the first kiss... he must be a saint."

Rowan gave Eiryk a cheeky grin.
"Really though, Eiryk, he loves you. If he doesn't want to get married will it really matter in the end? You're both together, surrounded by friends who care about you and love you. Alex wants to be with you. He's made that clear. Be happy and if he says no to marriage, figure out why and be willing to compromise."

That was the best advice he could give. It was funny how level-headed Alex could be, Rowan thought. Also, though, he had a stubborn streak that rivaled that of the average mule. He'd learned that from Eiryk. Still, he suspected the two men would reach an agreement that worked for them both, even if they had to take a tiny bit of the wind out of Eiryk's sails.

Eiryk wasn't at all put off by this suggestion and practically beamed.

"Oh! Theme wedding do you have any idea how much fun that will be? Legos and sushi and dancing. Do you want a Mothra or just downed power lines?"

Opening and closing his mouth a few times Eiryk tried to counter that but it was a bit tricky. Was he really -that- over the top and needy? He thought about it for a second and decided that Rue was exaggerating and just let it go.

"Any excuse for a party, to give a present or to... "

Undoubtedly Rue had the same active imagination he did. Eiryk didn't need to complete that sentence. It would easily be completed.

Rowan was right. It killed him to admit that but he was. He and Alex didn't -need- to be married. It was entirely possible to be a happy little family without that formality. And with folks like Rowan and Christian and Kem and Aishe and Pak about they'd be a happy big family. It didn't mean he wouldn't ask or at least put the idea out there, it just meant it wasn't something that had to be done.

"Oh it isn't a make or break thing. It isn't like I knocked him up or he has an angry father with a shot gun standing behind him. I'm sure we can be happy without but it would be nice..."

Rowan couldn't help it... he had to indulge himself at some point tonight. "No Legos," he said. "I can't do Legos. There was this one time back in the seventies when I had a horrible accident at FAO Schwartz in New York City and it traumatized me. The Lego robot gave me nightmares for months."

He delivered the falsehood with a completely straight face. He hadn't been in New York in the seventies but Eiryk didn't know that.
"There were children screaming and old ladies hobbling out of the way and everything."

He shuddered.
"And the sushi... well. We'll discuss the menu but I'm leaning more toward calamari. It's a 20,000 Leagues thing."

As with many of his lies, Rowan mixed bits of truth in with them. It made it more difficult for people to know what was what. Even Eiryk, who he'd known for ages, tended not to pursue a topic when Rowan started this bullshit. And Rowan frankly did not want to ponder some sort of theoretical wedding ceremony. It would happen, or it would not. He wasn't about to jinx himself by planning it out, even in jest. It was enough that he had Cris by his side. He was more than satisfied.

He laughed outright at Eiryk's refusal to counter his accusation. Rowan nodded agreeably. Eiryk did like a good party. Planned a good one too. That last bit... yeah, Rowan could get on board with that. He could hardly say anything at all when he remembered not long ago running from a restaurant with Cris to barely make it inside the door of Cris's apartment before going down on him right there in the entry way. Rowan sighed with a smile.

"I hear you," he said, "Any excuse. Lucky Alex. Lucky you, too. He's hot. You have good taste if I do say so myself."

Certain redheads were pretty hot too. He was just sayin'.

It was good to hear Eiryk calm down some. His friend seemed to be thinking rationally again. Rowan didn't want to rain on his parade but it did seem possible that Alex would want something else from their long-term relationship. Eiryk had to prepare for the best and for the worst. Rowan would hate to see him disappointed but at least Alex didn't really seem the type to string him along. Rowan only hoped that if he did decide he couldn't spend his life with a man who would never age, Alex would sever it quickly and painlessly. He couldn't help but think, though, that Alex had agreed to move in with Eiryk. He was the quiet, thoughtful type - so Rowan assumed that must have crossed his mind once or twice.

Whatever conclusions the human had reached, hopefully they were good ones for Eiryk. Rowan didn't want to have to cheer him up again... not because he didn't like to do it, but because he preferred Eiryk continue to have reasons to be his usual happy self. Frustration and angst didn't suit him.

It sounded legit, over the top but more or less legit and lord only knew where Rowan had been in the seventies. Actually, Eiryk wasn't sure where he'd been in the seventies, he'd have to check his journal. Once in a while time just all blurred together. He though he'd been in England, at least in the early part of the decade. Might have been South America though, possibly South Africa.

At any rate he gambled that this was one of Rue's tales. He had no evidence, just a gut feeling.

"I think if there had been a Lego disaster of those proportions... I would have been involved."

Eiryk deadpanned. Oh... Calamari tasty, but was he allergic to that? He couldn't remember. He was going to have to start keeping a list.

"There might be issues with the calamari, but we could conceivably dress you up like Captain Nemo."

It was now Eiryk's turn to smile dreamily thinking of his boyfriend. All that long lean muscle and those soft brown eyes and the fact that was so... ummmm... flexible. And he was so sweet, so kind, so perfectly Alex. Coming back from his little day dream he grinned at his old friend.

"What can I say my taste has always been flawless."

And that was the long and the short of it, he picked good people to have close to him. Not always easy people but always good. And he'd picked the very best to have the closest any one ever had been. It was thrilling and scary all at the same time, it was, after all, love.

"You know even if he does say no I think we'll have a party, maybe something for his birthday. You'll have to hose it though."
Rowan Murphy 12 years ago
"He said beers and wii," Rowan reminded Eiryk. Alex had claimed not to want a birthday party of any sort, but Rowan had seen Eiryk do similar things before; agree to 'simple' and then complicate it until it got 'elaborate.' It wasn't meant to be that way; Eiryk just liked to do things... thoroughly.

The conversation had left the topic of morbid thought and they were back to their usual friendly, lighthearted banter. Rowan couldn't be sure without invoking his painful empathy but he thought Eiryk was feeling better about the topic. He didn't think he'd been much help, except as a sounding board, but sometimes that's all you needed.

He was sorry to have to stop at his one glass of mead; he really liked Eiryk's brewing. They'd have easily finished the bottle off between them if Rowan hadn't had to go into work. As it was, he figured Eiryk and Alex would do it plenty of justice later on the following evening - if Eiryk didn't just polish it off himself.

They spent another hour or so, talking, reminiscing, just hanging out in general until it was time for Rowan to don his scrubs and go to work. It was nearly four in the morning; time enough for him to get to the hospital where he was scheduled to work for the next sixteen hours. He'd be free at eight that evening, off for the next eight hours, and he planned to spend them with Cris. After the conversation he and Eiryk had just had, he didn't want to waste a moment. He suspected Eiryk felt the same.
