An awkward situation. (private)

((Continued from "Realize" in the Domicile

The red BMW M6 Coupe sped quietly up and out of the hidden gated entrance of the Domicile, racing down the dirt road leading out of the abandoned slaughter district. They headed west to the city without the benefits of headlights until they made it back onto the paved interstate.

Ellis sat quietly next to Simon who did not once take his eyes off of the road. As she finished her cigarette, she considered speaking via their bond but hesistated. Opening the window just a hair, she slipped the used cigarette out into the night.

For the next twenty minutes she looked at the dashboard of the coupe and admired all the extra options and smooth ride. Finally they reached Nachton Strip and as she looked out of the window, she tested their bond.

[Simon?]

She was startled by the sound of his voice and irritated tone.

She had been holding her breath, at least that's how it felt when the moment had been broken by the sound of Simon's cell phone. Ellis took a step back against the car and felt the rush of want take her breath away. She hadn't blushed this much since she was ten and...well human.

Odd, she thought. To be reminded of being human when she was with Simon. Ellis had never known him as one and it had been so long since she had actually been one. Yet there she was, catching her breath and feeling her cheeks burn red.

Simon nearly dropped his cell phone and she cracked a smile as she held her hands against her stomach. Exhaling, she tried to compose herself. Want was rapidly being replaced by a jittery cause of the nerves. The adrenaline her body had just been feeding on was leaving and she felt her hands shake as Simon turned to speak to the caller. Reaching into her pockets she pulled out her pack of cigarettes and quickly lit one.

'...Marthinus?'

She slipped the Babylon matches out of the pack's cellophane and stuck a match. Ellis' eyes focused on the tip of the cigarette, lighting it with the flame when Simon uttered his grandson's name. Her eyes flicked up as she tossed the match away.

'Bad time? Not...really.'

Ellis smiled as she took another long pull on the cigarette. Oh no, Marty wasn't interrupting anything. She concentrated on Simon's voice as she casually smoked, the action was calming her nerves, as it always did, and gave her time to think.

They had just nearly kissed. And not just lip locking kissing, this would have been deep, soul searching that led to much fucking kissing. It had been two years almost since they had been together that way and the starch of her button up t-shirt that the Merc's had brought her in the hospital made that apparent against her bare skin underneath. She rolled her shoulders trying to work out the tension in them.

'...Neutral territory, in public and during the night...I don't know, I can't promise you anything.'

Interesting. A meeting between who? Marthinus' new family and Simon? On neutral ground. Ellis listened as Simon asked for Marthinus to speak to him tomorrow night, obviously not wanting to speak in front of her. With a nod she dropped her cigarette to the ground and rubbed it out with the toe of her boot. She heard the click of his cell phone closing and as she looked up, Simon passed her and walked to the trunk of the car. He motioned her with his hand and she followed him.

The moment was not completely gone and if either one was planning on picking up where they left off, neither was showing any signs of it.

As he passed her on his way to the trunk, he walked through the familiar cloud of cigarette smoke. It parted and curled in the wake of his movement and unconsciously he knew that later he would smell of it. Simon waved for Ellis to follow him as he opened the trunk with the keyless entry remote.

It popped open softly and he pushed it up the rest of the way revealing six duffel bags lined up neatly. He kept one hand on the trunk lid and rubbed his chin with the other.

'These are yours.' He pulled open a bag and showed her the contents. 'Your clothes and other items from your apartment in the Domicile. Same with the car. If you want, the rest of your place can be cleaned out and delivered to where ever you want.'

He stepped back and Ellis leaned in to look at the contents. Finally she looked up at him. This is where they would part ways, for now. He knew he'd never be able to completely cut her off from his life, especially now with the bond.

'I think it's best that we not use the bond from here on out. As far as I know, the less we use it, the less strength it has and it'll eventually fade.' He thought for a moment, jingling the keys in his hand.

'It's odd though, isn't it? This thing between us. The bond, I mean,' because that statement alone could have meant any number of things at that moment. 'It's like seeing you in three dimensions. But I think it's pointless now, the way things are.' Simon tossed the car keys in her direction and tried to finish his thought.

'With us being...' In cahoots? In an awkward situation? In love, even? His thoughts were interrupted by her interpretation of their relationship.

'Over.' She caught the keys in her right hand and she looked down at them.

It wasn't a question so much as a statement being admitted into as a possible fact. The moment she said it she knew it was a lie. They weren't over, not by a long shot. She had to admit to herself that the bond meant something. They meant it back in the cabin and not three minutes ago when they had let everything around them, all the issues, clan in-fighting, and painful past disappear. It was a perfect moment in time and they were so few and far between for the both of them now.

'Yeah,' she mumbled and put her hand on the trunk. 'Yeah I know what you mean.' She closed the trunk lid and looked at the keys in her hand. She jiggled it and smiled.

'Thanks for the wheels.' She grinned and circled around to the driver side door. 'Uh, sorry about yours.'

Ellis opened the car door and turned to slip inside when she stopped suddenly. Looking back over her shoulder she opened her mouth to say something. What she had planned on saying escaped her at the moment. He made it easy for her, like he always did but never deserved.

Simon winced but grinned at her comment about his car. He let her go, not electing to turn and watch but when she hesitated getting in, he again looked into her eyes.

'Yes you can come to the meeting, considering it's probably about you and I anyway.' Ellis started to speak again when he cut her off this time in a soft, low voice. 'And yes, I know that wasn't what you were going to say.'

Simon stepped back onto the sidewalk and walked away from Ellis. He had forgotten his jacket in his haste to get her out of the Domicile and the fall wind was cold against his arms. He left her there, standing as beautiful as ever and probably as ruthless, as well. That perfect moment was gone and it was time to be Leader again.

And he had a party to plan for.
