Sour Notes

The ballroom had excellent accoustics and the stereo blasted loudly as Amberelle spun and swirled around to the music. Looking like something from a music video she slid and gyrated to the music of one of her guily pleasures, another blonde Louisiana native. Her senses were dulled so she never noticed the door move slightly or heard the slight rustle of cloth.

Sweat ran down her back, soaked the front of her white tank top and glistened on her brow but she didn't notice. Her feet were encased in faded and worn black ballet shoes and her leotard pants didn't interfere with her movements. Twirling her head as her braid landed over a shrugging shoulder she sang along. Pouting she strutted several steps towards the mirror before stopping to sing the chorus.

Hit me baby one more time...

Patience was one of Celeste's only virtues. Since her arrival the brunette had taken her time, quietly studying her youngest cousin. There had been several rather suprising revelations. It seemed little Amby had started to come out of her shell, and while at one time that would have pleased her it only infuriated her now. Yet she took comfort that some things never changed.

Standing just inside the ballroom, blending into the background, the only thing that moved were her cold blue eyes as they followed the blonde around the ballroom. It took supreme effort but her lip didn't twitch as her ears were assaulted by the sugary pop music. A part of her acknowledged the grace and skill exhibited as Amberelle moved, yet each passing moment those same skills caused her to be more and more furious with the stray De'Espionne.

'So much potential and she wastes it. Such a disgrace..' Cel clenched her jaw. An especialy off key note from the blonde made her wince. Thank the Gods that Amby only sang when she was alone or drunk. The world was a better place.

Panting after a solid four song stint, Amby walked over to the stereo and started skipping songs. She wasn't in the mood for anything slow, Britney or not. Loud thumping bass made her smile and bounce away, clapping and spinning into a foot pounding set. Yeah yeah.. since you been gone..

Swirling towards the wall she stopped and turned, stretched and went into a series of flips and tumbles mixed in with dance moves. Maybe next time she'd bring along her swords and work in some blade work with her dance. That was always fun.

The blonde worked her way over towards the door, intent to grab one of the stacked chairs and work on some of the moves she'd been learning in her classes at The Studio. As she got closer, still dancing and singing along she started when a soft breeze blew over her. Swallowing hard the smile faded from her lips.

That smell... Cloves and rosewater with notes of leather. Sour, yet sweet. It was something she recognized very well. Yet in an instant it was gone, as if only a figment of her imagination. Spinning around, her head jerked side to side as Amberelle scanned the room. Suddenly the music was far too loud and only masked any tell tale traces that could have betrayed if she truely had an audience.

Once the direction her cousin was taking set in, Celeste pondered her next actions for a moment. One hand slid down to grip the hilt of her wakizashi tightly but she didn't draw the weapon. Seeing the rapid rise and fall of the blonde's chest and the sweat dripping from her brow solidified her decision. 'It wouldn't be fair, I want her rested and capable of a good fight.'

Staying carefully blended she timed her steps with Amby's, moving to the beat as she slid past the other De'Espionne, letting the music cover her. If the girl was up to snuff she was on borrowed time. Cel moved lightly, stepping in time with the thump of the bass as she moved across the room rapidly. Looking over her shoulder, Celeste could see the fear on her little cousin's face as she looked around the rooom. 'Ahh good girl, you sensed me. At least you haven't gotten too sloppy.'

The song came to an end and Celeste held her breath, frozen in place and she willed her heart to stop. Icy eyes locked on Amby's face as the younger Creole strained to pick up anything during those few seconds of silence. It wasn't hard to hide for a brief moment from her golden cousin's feline sense, everything except smell was avoidable. Celeste knew from experience actually. Silence for only a fraction of a moment and the next song began, making Amberelle blink and shake her head as it hit her hard. The blonde closed her eyes and spun slowly, trying to feel or smell anything.

That was all Celeste needed and she let her body relax and loosened her grip on this realm to become something etheral and beyond death. Stepping backwards through the ballroom's wall she disappeared. Her last sight of Amberelle made her smile. Utter confusion and fear. What a wonderful sight.

Visibly shaken, Amberelle walked quickly to the portable stereo she'd brought and turned it off with a click. The sudden silence rang in her ears, and she couldn't stop looking around her. 'I'm losing my mind, I must be.. It was my imagination, it had to be.' she told herself over and over. But a strange chill ran through her and she shivered. Wrapping her arms around herself the blonde bit her lip. After all this time, why would something change? How could she smell that scent as clear as day? Even now she'd swear she could sense it, but she second guessed herself and wondered if it was something her mind had conjured up.

Her earlier mood shattered, Amby quickly gathered up the radio and CDs she had brought and headed back to her suite. After a hot shower she'd feel better and would put this whole strange mess out of her mind, she told herself firmly. And she'd find Alex and make him hold her, that always made her feel better.

Still, when she got to her rooms she was going to shut and lock her door for once.
