Old Friends

Even before he was fully awake, Drev knew Wren wasn't in bed with him. He stretched out, but it only made the huge bed seem more empty.
She must be out looking for studio space again. With a sigh, he got up, brushed his teeth, dressed in a pair of worn-out jeans and an old Pink Floyd t-shirt, and left. He didn't have much desire to sit around alone all day. At least not in his condo. On his way out, he glanced at theclock; it was almost 7pm.

When he got outside, he thought about taking a ride downtown on his bike, but the evening promised to be relatively cool and comfortable. Instead, he decided to go on a stroll around the neighborhood.

Meegan's smile brightened. She loved talking about the baby.

"Rachyl is due in May. I'm hoping that by then I can convince her to stay at home with the baby. She doesn't want to leave me with out an assistant, but neither of us wants to use day care or to bring the kiddo to work with us.

As for names, we've decided on either Abigail Peyton or Rebeccah June if it is a girl and Lucas Brandon or Christopher Michael if it is a boy. We are really hoping for a girl, just because of the whole two moms thing. If we could have some how picked the sex we would have, but science isn't that far advanced yet."

Her face was split with her smile as she sipped from her tea again.

"We've already bought all of the big things, now we are working on buying every day stuff like bottles, pacifiers, blankets, sheets and that sort of thing. The people at the office are hinting at throwing a shower, but I'm hoping I can convince them to donate whatever money they plan to spend to the IVF Foundation. They help infertile couples who can't afford IVF."

Meegan sipped her tea to stop talking. If Drev let her she would go on and on about everything baby in their lives.

Hearing the name 'Abigail' sent a tendril of nostalgic longing through Drev's body. He could still see Lady Abigayle's face as clearly as if he'd just seen her this morning. With a mental shrug, he was able to push it away.

"Beautiful names," he said with a smile. "Do you know anything about the... uhh... the donor?"

Meegan had to stifle a giggle. It was a question she expected to answer, but she still found it funny.

"Only what the dossier says. We've never met him nor do we ever hope to. He's healthy, handsome and very intelligent. So we're happy. We spent hours finding the right donor, but it was worth the effort, well I hope it will be. Hopefully there isn't some weird deformity that snakes its way down his family tree, because that would suck."

Meegan gave Drev a grin and finished off her tea. Looking up she caught the eye of the barista and motioned for another tea.

"We had thought to ask a friend, but that could have huge potential to be really messy. I try to avoid messy."

"Yeah, that might have been a little akward," he agreed, smiling. He started thinking about what a conversation like that would sound like; how would you ask someone something like that? 'Hey Bill, can we borrow some of your sperm?'

"Would you have asked me?" The question was out of his mouth before his brain was aware of it. "No, I'm sorry; you don't have to answer that...."

What would he have done if she had? Obviously he help them, he being sterile and all. But he found that he was curious as to whether Meegan admired him enough to consider using his genes to create her child.

'What the hell was that about?! There's some creepy, weird goings-on in this brain of yours, Calo....'

That was a tough question to answer. She really had no idea if she would have asked him or not. Meegan tilted her head and really looked at him. A slow smile curled her lips, she leaned forward and curled her fingers with his.

"You would make beautiful babies, Drev. I think if asking a friend were an option, you would have been on the list."

Yes, lovely little irish-italian babies. Meegan kept her gaze on his. 'What an intimate thing to share with someone.' Meegan swallowed, and bit her lower lip against a need to kiss him.

Drev couldn't help chuckling self-consciously. "Well thank you. I'm honored." He bowed a little bit in the chair. He took another sip of his tea and caught sight of an artistic clock on the wall. It said was about quarter after 8.

"Oh wow, I didn't realize it was after eight already... I should be getting back home; I hadn't intended to be out quite so long." He took another hasty sip of tea, then sat looking at Meegan for a brief moment. He really didn't want to leave, but Wren would probably be home soon, and he had plans for her.

"It was great to see you again, Meegan," he said, smiling as he rose from his chair. "You still have my cell phone number, right?"

Meegan stood with him. She was a bit shocked at the time herself.

"I think so. I never took it out of my phone."

Meegan felt awkward again. She wanted to hug Drev, but didn't know if that would be appropriate or wanted.

"It was good seeing you too. I'll call you and we'll set up a dinner date so that I can meet Wren and you can meet Rachyl."

She stood smiling at him, unsure and self-conscious.

"Sounds good," he said and slipped smoothly around the small table to embrace Meegan. It was a perfectly polite hug, and the kiss to her cheek was no more than he'd give any other close friend. But even so, he couldn't ignore the feel of her body. He leaned back, hands still resting lightly on her waist, their bodies still close, and smiled down at her. "Take care, and I look forward to seeing you again." He kissed her other cheek before turning to leave.

Meegan breathed deeply of Drev's scent as he embraced her. Her arms wrapped around him, and she held him just a moment longer than was proper. He kissed her cheek gently and she smiled.

"Same here. Have a good night."

She watched him walk away, and only when the bells on the door had stopped their jingling sway, did she bend to pick up her purse. Placing several folded bills on the table, she too left and headed for home.

((Drev (with permission) and Meegan out. Lock up please.))
