New Toys

/ooc teh open! Watch your step.

Theo signed her name, with a great deal of self importance, on the line indicated by the delivery man, and stepped back to let him pull the cardboard away from the four by four plastic crate inside. He offered to move the crate where she wanted it, but she declined and sent him away, barely looking at him in her excitement.

Frowning for a moment while she decided where to put her new toy, she finally pushed the crate to the middle of the lobby and opened it up. With a gleeful grin at the contents, she tipped it over and giggled in delight at the sound of thousands and thousands of legos spilling all over the tiled floors.

Ebay really was a wonderful thing.

Still grinning happily, she took the leftover cardboard and tore it up into respectable dividers for the crate, then began sorting out the legos by color, size, and function.

Theo gave an unconcerned shrug at Aaron’s announcement, though she wondered if –he- might be worried. He certainly didn’t have to tell her his age; it probably wouldn’t have occurred to her to ask, in fact. Still, she felt she ought to say something.

“I guess it’s all relative. Four hundred years is still a long time by anyone’s reckoning I think.”

She was pleased that Mari was apparently quite ready and able to help, though she fidgeted uncomfortably at her next question before answering.

“Well…we’re going to build something.” The ‘we’, in her opinion, was rather generous of her, but if they were going to help with the sorting and counting they should, to be fair, be allowed to help with the building as well.

That she had no idea –what- they would be building just didn’t bear mentioning right now. First the counting, planning after.
MARI 17 years ago
MARI turned towards Aaron and solemnly agreed.

"Theodosia is quite correct. For instance I am less than ten years old but that is a very long time in the life of a computer."Â?

She would not classify herself as a simple computer but MARI understood that was what many people considered her. Computers were her close cousins and many of her parts were the same. She was constantly improved, modified and repaired much the same way that human cells lived, died and changed within their bodies. They were a very efficient system that was truly marvelous because they rarely needed outside help with their day to day maintenance.

Turning to Theo, she blinked once before replying.

"I believe that was the understood function of the blocks, Theodosia. Did you have a specific structure in mind?"Â?

Another part of her consciousness was busy ordering a small clean up detail of robots to the scene. Knowing that the small vampire did not always enjoy surprises, MARI wheeled them forward slowly and lined the four little white bodied robots smartly in front of Theo, each standing patiently at attention and waiting for orders.

"I brought sorting assistance. This is Eenie, Meenie, Miney and Moe."Â?

((OOC: Sorry for the delay. ))
Aaron 17 years ago
Aaron managed to hid his releaf behind a nutral smile, something he had gotten quite good at in all his years as a Duke and later diplomat. He nodded.

"Yes, I would say that most people in the world would concider more than 400 years of life to be quite an acomplishment."

He kept largely out of Theodosa and MARI's conversation, since he had been brought up to think interupting another's discussion was rude, but couldn't help himself when the AI revealed the names of the little white robots she had recruted to assist them. He laughed and shook his head.

"Did you just come up with that, MARI? Because its quite good."
Theodosia 17 years ago
Theo smiled and nodded slightly at the agreement coming from all sides, content to consider the matter of age and relativism solved for now. There were more important things to do, after all. Like sorting legos.

Sighing softly at the understanding that Mari was not satisfied with her answer, she decided she ought to produce some sort of plan.

“Maybe we could build the San Marco Basilica.”

Though that was the first idea that came to mind, it inevitably led to others.

“Or we could build another church I saw with Alfarinn and Christian.”

She didn’t see much point in mentioning the two other boys who were with them, since they weren’t even in the same clan. Still, if Alfarinn was going to buy it maybe he would like the lego version as a present.

“Or we could make up something of our own, if you’d rather…”

Deciding that was enough ideas for the moment, considering there were still plenty of blocks to sort out, she shifted her weight on her legs and got back to work. However, before she could get too settled there was an intrusion of little robots! They seemed fairly harmless and even sort of cute, but she wasn’t too sure about these machines.

She got down on eye level with the little robots, crouching forward with a slight frown and inspecting each one carefully. This was done with great caution; she would lean forward, then sharply pull back a bit, then lean forward a little more, until she was so close a robot could easily bop her on the nose.

Finally deeming them safe, she sat back on her heels, regarding the four machines from a greater distance. Then, her decision made, she slid a different colored block in front of each robot, explaining as she went.

“Eenie can sort the green, Meenie can sort the black, Miney can have the yellow and Moe can sort the red.”

Once she had picked colors that she felt suited each robot’s name, she returned to her own task, lifting up several white bricks with a look and pulling them over to the bins, watching to see what the robots would do out of the corner of her eye. Aaron seemed accepting of them as well, unfazed even; Theo liked that, and it served to reinforce her theory that her new friend was, indeed, pretty cool.
MARI 17 years ago
MARI turned the visual representation of herself towards Aaron in order to at least appear to give him her full attention.

"No, That would be one of the designers. They have a habit of picking names that are part of a grouping for multiples of the same design. The trio of vacuum cleaners in the computer room are currently named Larry, Curly and Moe."Â?

She considered Theo's choices and began to estimate what would be the optimal pattern and block use for the design. Perhaps detail was more important than conservation of blocks. MARI altered her plans to add as many details as possible with the estimated number of blocks available.

For the San Marco Basilica.

There was a snag when she came to reference of a church that Alfarinn and Christian had been to. That could have been anything. She would have to ask for clarification if that was the design that Theo wished to choose.

MARI blinked at the vampire and pondered her wishes. Did she have any? Not that she could discern.

"I will be happy with whatever you choose."Â?

That was the correct saying. Would she be happy with whatever Theodosia chose? What if it was ugly? Did she have a personal opinion on what was considered ugly?

She amended.

"So long as it is accurate."Â?

She set the robots to their tasks and soon they were busy scuttling along between the pile and the bins. They could hold little more than two blocks at a time unless they were connected together with more than one of the same color. It was not as efficient as it could be.

She contacted a startled member of the maintenance personale via a wall unit and requested that they deliver four dust pans to the robots working in the lobby.
Aaron 17 years ago
Aaron blinked, attempting to remember what those names meant... Curly, Lary, and Moe... They were fammiliar to him somehow, but... Oh, yes, an old television seires, he had seen it occatonaly, slap-stick, was the term, wasn't it? Three scraggy men hurting each other in ammuseing ways. He had found it funny when he had seen it, though that had been years ago. What had it been called... The three somethings... Stooges! The Three Stooges.

With this information in hand, he pulled together a sutiable comment.
"Oh? are they fond of smacking each other about?"

Conversation turned twords what they were planning on building out of the blocks, and he remained largely out of it. He didn't really have an oppinion of what they should construct, so long as it passed the time.
Theodosia 17 years ago
Theo listened in on Aaron and MARI’s conversation while continuing to work, watching the robots out of the corner of her eye. She liked the robot’s names too and was glad Aaron had asked after their origins, as she hadn’t thought to.

It took her a moment to make the connection when MARI mentioned the names of the vacuum cleaners; television had still been a little disturbing at the time the three stooges was airing, and that show wasn’t really an exception. She had never really understood that sort of comedy. It wasn’t nice to hit people, in the first place, and in the second place if someone tried to hit –her-, she wouldn’t just stand there and wait for it, she’d claw their eyes out. Shrugging, she contributed her opinion.

“If they do they should get in trouble. It’s only fair.”

Frowning as the blocks gradually made their way into bins and the pile in front of them decreased in size, she paused in her sorting for a moment, sitting back on her heels. It bothered her to start on one thing before the first thing was done but perhaps if it could be resolved they could get back on task. She had suggested a few options for what to build and MARI had contributed.

“So what do you want to build, Aaron?”
MARI 17 years ago
MARI considered Aaron's question. She realized she had not given any thought into the reason for choosing the names other than to recognize the reference to the television show. Now it seemed that there was an additional reason for the pairing of name to robot.

"Not often. They do,however, bump into quite a few walls and the furniture. They have sensors on them but in order to get into the corners they do have to bump up against things. Also from time to time people have been known to trip over them."Â?

The maintenance man arrived and each of the robots came over in turn and received a dust pan. They returned to work; though now they placed the dust pan onto the floor next to them and reached for all those blocks of the right color in their area before picking up the pan and returning to the bin with them.

"Thank you, Charlie."Â?

Each of the little robots stood up, turned and gave Charlie a little bow before returning to work. Charlie grinned and gave the group a little wave before heading back to the work he had been doing before the dust pan request had been made.

((OOC: Charlie the janitor or whatever he does, made up for the sake of story. Feel free to use him in order to react if you wish. ))
Aaron 17 years ago
"Well, I really haven't had any epiphanies since sitting down... Hmmm..."

He closed his eyes leaning back on the balls of his feet to think about it... What could they build... Something famous, large, but not so complex that it would prove impossible to build... Famous buildings made him think castles, but for the life of him he couldn't think of any famous ones at that moment... Apart from... The Tower of London would work, or rather, a part of it.

From the thought of the old prison, he jumped to the Bastille, which made him think of France, which was neigh defined by the old museum known at the Louvre.

He opened his eyes

"Hmmm... well, lets see... Off the top of my head, I can suggest the White Tower, the Bastille, and the Louvre."

Aaron had thought thorugh the entire time Charlie had been bringing the Dustpans, and missed him entirely.
Theodosia 17 years ago
Theo kept very still and patient while Aaron considered his options, resisting the urge to continue sorting and return to that fully focused effort. She did, however, offer up a cheery smile and wave when Charlie came with dustpans. Paul sternly prevented her from making one of the dustpans follow the maintenance worker as he left, ending with a rather effective argument.

Really, what would your new friend think?

Theo managed to avoid scowling at that. Still, she wasn’t sure how much of a sense of humor Aaron had and maybe it would be better not to be too silly. The fact that they were playing with blocks on the floor notwithstanding.

Aaron gave his input and Theo thought this over carefully. It would seem that she wanted a church, and he wanted something French, if majorities in suggestions were anything to go by. She wasn’t very good at compromises, mostly because it was so much more fun to get one’s own way, but she thought this would be easy enough.

“How about Jumièges?”

She frowned, trying to put together her memories of that location. She –sort of- remembered it but her efforts toward making a replica would more likely be interpretive rather than accurate, which wouldn’t please MARI at all.

“I’ll need some pictures though…I don’t remember that one very well,” she hinted, then happily returned to sorting, believing the decision was made. The robots were proving quite useful in their task, especially with the dustpans; Theo might have been a little suspicious at first but she felt she was big enough to admit that. They would soon be done with their sorting at this rate and could start building.
MARI 17 years ago
MARI took photos of each of Aaron's suggestions and began making decisions on which would be the best choice to use....should she be asked. It was an AI's job to be prepared for questions. They were less difficult in design than some of Theodosia's lego aspirations and she wondered if the blonde would enjoy making any of them. However, MARI did have to wonder if Aaron was being the more practical of the two of them.

She put her latest plans on hold with Theo's most recent suggestion and displayed pictures of the building from various angles and in different lighting conditions in order to refresh the ancient's memory.

"Will these be serviceable?

The abbey was now in ruins which might pose a problem in perception for Theodosia who likely visited it in a much different state.

"Were you wanting to represent the present Jumièges or how it appeared when it was first built?"

If Theo wanted to make a model of the original building then MARI would have to make a composite of the pictures and build up a blueprint and then decide how best to fit that plan to the legos they had available.
Aaron 17 years ago
The sorting was nearly finished by now, and Aaron found himself without much left to do... He left the robots to it, watching them scuttle across the ground wit the dustpans with obveous ammusement...

Theo made a sugestion that seemed the best of both worlds, a french church. Since most of his sugestions had been less than... shall we say 'nice' places, he thought her decision of the old church to be a better idea.

Mari, like the dilagent Artificial person she was, brought up pictues of the cathedral quickly, and Aaron glanced over them.

"I've always liked the effect that time can have on the look of a building, a bit silly, but I would say its modern day appearence."
Theodosia 17 years ago
Theo quietly studied the images for some time, not realizing until Aaron answered that MARI had asked a question. She –knew- what the Abbey looked like nowadays, having seen pictures before, but it was still surprising how her memory clashed with reality.

She nodded her head, not taking her eyes away from the pictures.

“I agree.”

Not only had the three of them managed to agree on a subject and style, but Theo also rather optimistically thought that this could turn into quite a work of art. Normally she was not overly concerned with accuracy, preferring to put ‘interpretation’ and even a touch of the whimsical into her pieces. Building Jumièges in its current state, though, was expressive enough of a concept on its own, and thus an ideal subject for MARI’s accurate style.

Besides, the meticulous aspect of this would be fun, and that was part of the point of using legos in the first place – building something tiny piece by tiny piece rather than all at once.

Meenie dropped the last piece into the appropriate pile and Theo nodded her head at the robots.

“That was very good.”

Caught up in her own visions of building, she didn’t even consider the fact that perhaps the lobby was not the best place to build a replica of a ruined building. She gave a thoughtful tug to her hair and looked around thoughtfully for a moment before deciding on a plan and gesturing to the T-intersection at the end of the hall, in front of the elevators.

“We should lay out the foundation first; I think over here should give us enough room.”
MARI 17 years ago
Mari watched the completion of the sorting from her place...well everywhere, but specifically from the graphic that she had up on the wall. Once the legos all been picked up off the floor and put into their correct bin she sent the robots on their way.

Eenie, Meenie, Miney and Moe each bowed to Theodosia and Aaron before spinning about several times on their little wheel bases and then rolling off. Each had their dust bin held upright in front of them like a miniature soldier on parade.

She now had an exact count of the legos. There were 235,000 pieces of varying sizes.

The two vampires seemed to have decided on a modern version of the building. She placed up an outline with height proportions marked on the sides. It was possible to give a blue print, estimation on brick usage and suggested layout but she knew that humans, and vampires, many times preferred to make creative decisions themselves.

Regarding the place that Theo suggested for a building arena, MARI spoke up. Hopefully another solution could be reached that would give the Chief of Security greater peace of mind than a lego structure being created in the path of elevator traffic.

“I would suggest conference room 2. It is currently empty and I can secure it for your use.”

Knowing that some explanation might be in order, MARI added.

“It will be out the way of traffic, will allow you some privacy and will keep any visitors from remarking curiously.”

((OOC: The brick estimation can be altered. I looked up a brick sculpture of good size and doubled the bricks used. Sorry this post took so long, my mother has been in the hospital. ))
Aaron 17 years ago
Aaron smiled at Theo when she agreed with him. He liked it when everyone agreed with everyone else, and that he just so happened to be the one she was agreeing with helped a bit too. He would have been perfectly willing to help either way, but he liked that there wasn't going to be any argument. Made things smoother.

The Victorian Vampire had to stiffle laughter at the propper, military way in wich the little robots said there goodbyes. It looked silly, and reminded him poingently of the show their names were from, if only for the ridiculusness of the performance.

When Theodosa picked out a blank bit of hall space in which to build, Aaron half opened his mouth to sugest they move somewhere else... if only to avoid the trafic. Of cource, MARI (being the good AI she was) beat him to the puntch. He smiled at the projection on the wall.

"I can help move the box." He doubted that he would be able to lift that amount of bricks by himself... Vampiric strength or no, that was allot of colored plastic.
Theodosia 17 years ago
Theo gave a delicate giggle at the robots’ exit, deciding she quite liked the little machines and would like them to visit again. She wondered where they lived and thought to ask, but then realized there was a problem.

She looked doubtful at MARI’s suggestion that they move, suspecting she was being ordered around and shunted away, but the AI’s reasonable arguments sufficiently proved this wasn’t the case. Giving a slow and still mildly skeptical ‘okay…’, she pushed herself up off the floor, clearly not totally convinced but accepting enough of the idea.

After all, just because they built it in the conference room didn’t mean the final structure had to stay there. And furthermore, Aaron wanted to move too, or else he wouldn’t have offered to help with the box. Deciding the matter was settled, she beamed a smile at her clanmate and took hold of one end of the box, using her telekinesis to give her a little boost, and led the way to the conference room where they could build. Along the way she chatted happily enough, her threatening bad mood forgotten as quickly as it had approached.

“The conference room is nice too – we’ll have a table there so we don’t have to sit on the floor. Unless we want to, of course. And there might be a wet bar there – some people like that. I like the bottles, but I’m supposed to wait until they’re empty before I use them…” Deciding that she would rather not bring up –that- rather embarrassing memory, she swiftly changed the subject. “Have you been to Jumièges before? In person I mean.”
MARI 17 years ago
MARI monitored the progress of both of the vampires as they moved the box towards the conference room. It was one of several such on the ground floor that was used for meeting with guests of the residences. People that you did not trust enough to allow higher up into the building. Its nearby location made it a good choice for the lego construction site.

She appeared briefly on Christian's wall.

"Theodosia and Aaron are in conference room two. They are planning on building Jumièges if you care to look in on its progress later."

Appearing on a side wall in the new room, MARI watched as they set up. She used the other three walls as visual aids. One held the height map from different views, the other held photos of the building and the last held a read out of the number and type of bricks they had available.

It was unfortunate that she did not have a more physical way to help. The robots were good at sorting but they did not have the fine motor control to place the bricks.

((OOC: Alas, at this stage she can't be much help ))
Aaron 17 years ago
Aaron assisted Theo in lugging the crate twords the conference chamber. She seemed to be happy enough with the move, chatting away in the way the happy normaly did. She mentioned a wet bar, though he didn't drink. Tobaco was enough of a vice, thank you very much.

He had been slightly worried that she wouldn't take to the move well, since she had seemed to have her heart set on building it in the loby. This was, again, preferable to an argument.

He hadn't ever been to Jumièges, unfortunately. It was odd, but, though his wife had orriginaly been French, he had spent very little time in her country of orrigen. Oh, he had been there of cource, though that had been mostly after she died, but he had spent most of his time in Paris. unfortunate, but true.

"No, I'm affraid not. I assume you have, or you wouldn't be asking."

They reatched the conference chamber and Aaron helped lift the box onto the long table in the center. MARI had the ruined cathedral's picture from several angles displayed on the walls. Very efficient. He smiled.

"Very nice, MARI"
Theodosia 17 years ago
Theo nodded slightly as she contemplated their work space, remembering her very short time at the abbey.

“Yes. I stayed there for a few days. A long time ago.”

Well, ‘long time ago’ was subjective, of course, but that was usually the thing to say when you couldn’t remember exact dates.

“I always wanted to go back, but I never did. It looks so different now.”

She frowned, trying to identify her own feelings. There had to be a certain amount of detachment when thinking about her past or she would just get too sad, but this time she had stumbled across better times in her remembrances.

When she spoke, though, she thought she sounded her age.

“Let’s set up the foundation on the table.”

That said, she went to work, taking the broad flat pieces and laying them out to make a base from which ruins could grow. She joined the sections together with single wide, six long pieces and then started on a small border.

Theo had never been very skilled at small talk, being somewhat shy and finding most people overwhelming. Aaron, however, was quiet to her senses and quite agreeable, and soon she was comfortably talking once again.

“So where –have- you been? I’ve been all over.” She amended, “Well, all over Europe, a little of the middle east, some of Africa…and Nachton of course. I haven’t gone many places since I got here though. Just little trips, and I always come back to the towers.”
MARI 17 years ago
MARI nodded her head at Aaron and favored him with a smile. Such a thoughtful and considerate vampire.

"Thank you Aaron. I am pleased you approve."Â?

She listened as they continued to speak of the cathedral. Unfortunately she had never been anywhere but the Towers and so could not fully join in the discussion. One might argue that an AI over the net could go anywhere but there were some things that needed to be fully experienced by travel.

She considered asking the technicians to allow her to fully access remote terminals, such as the company laptops and PDAs. If she was allowed to connect even a part of her intelligence to these devices then she could go places and experience things in a whole new way. It might not be walking around on her own two feet but for an AI it was doing pretty good.

((OOC: I'm afraid she can't help much. ))
